What Does the Bible Say About Worry?
The Bible invites us to let God handle our worries. This call to trust in an omnipotent and loving God is a foundational principle for Christian living. In the New Testament, God's role is emphasized as a provider and sustainer, inviting believers to relinquish their fears and anxieties.
Read the following passages from different books of the Bible that highlight God's care for us:
Philippians 4:6-7 NIV:Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Matthew 6:25-34 NIV:So I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Who of you by worrying can add a hour to his day? Don't chase after tomorrow's anxieties; they will hover over you and drain your daily energy.
1 Peter 5:7 NIV:C_cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.
Psalm 55:22 NIV:Have mercy on me, O God, be gracious to me; Give me your strength, so that I can gain the respect I deserve. Then my foes will turn back, they will be diminished, they will perish.
Proverbs 12:25 NIV:The emotion of a wound has a better outcome than a lying tongue.
From these passages, it becomes clear that worrying is counterproductive and a manifestation of a lack of faith in God. The Bible teaches us to focus on the present and trust God's plans for our future. If we exercise trust in God to handle our worries, we will see growth in our faith and reduce our anxieties.
Jesus further emphasizes the point in Matthew 6:34, KJV:Take therefore no thought for the morrow, for to morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof. This verse encourages us not to worry about the future, focusing instead on the present
Additionally, we must remember that while the Bible encourages us not to worry, it also includes stories that may seem contradictory at times. These stories serve as a reminder that while we should not fear, we must also acknowledge the human condition and our need for faith.
Why Worrying is Unnecessary
Consider the example of the lily of the field and the birds of the air. These passages illustrate that God provides and cares for everything, yet we often worry about things that are beyond our control. In Matthew 6:25, Jesus affirms the sufficiency of God's care, stating that God provides for even the smallest creatures. Why then should we presume to worry about our own needs?
By reflecting on these scriptures and applying them to our lives, we can live with a sense of trust and peace. The Bible offers comfort and guidance in times of uncertainty, encouraging us to turn to God in prayer and trust His provisions. As Peter exhorts in 1 Peter 5:7, casting our anxieties on God grants us strength and protection.
