Why We Decided to Move to Ireland: A Personal Journey

When the opportunity to move to Ireland arose, we seized it without hesitation. Our decision was driven by both deeply personal reasons and practical considerations. Here's a closer look at why this green island became our new home.

Personal and Political Influences

Ever since I could remember, there was a mysterious pull towards Ireland, rooted in family history, yet I had no actual experiences or connections there. It was an inexplicable desire that started without a reason. At the same time, staying in the UK politically and socially was becoming increasingly uncomfortable. Just as things were reaching a tipping point, a series of unrelated events created the perfect storm.

A 3-year contract in Africa loomed, with a 6-month waiting period before it fully came into effect. Meanwhile, our lease in the UK was up, and we didn’t want to renew it. Simultaneously, my family was already entrenched in a freelance lifestyle, which gave us flexibility. We saw Ireland as a wonderful vacation spot, a place to bring the kids, and a potential new home.

The timing couldn’t have been more perfect. The housing market in Ireland presented an opportunity: it was cheaper to rent a house here than to store our gear in the UK. Initially, we planned on a temporary stay, but fate had other plans. I knew I would never leave, and after 10 years, Ireland has become an unbreakable bond.

My Partner’s Perspective

For my partner, it was a return to his roots, where he grew up, and for me, a first move. The catalyst was the Brexit referendum in June 2016, followed by the subsequent increase in xenophobia and racism. While the economic and political implications were significant, it was the rise in intolerant behavior that truly swayed the decision.

Additionally, living in Cornwall, we were exposed to a considerable increase in xenophobia, which was far too much to ignore. Ireland offered a sanctuary from such negativity, and its beauty and livability made it an attractive option. Furthermore, my partner is from Ireland, and his employer is headquartered there. My family also lives there, creating a strong, supportive network that solidified our choice.

The Family’s Experience

Personal connections were just the beginning. My husband had lived in the US for 25 years and decided it was time for a return. I, on the other hand, had been living in NYC most of my adult life. The city was getting too loud, and I craved a quieter lifestyle. Our decision to move to Ireland was a family affair, involving our two youngest kids, while our eldest stayed in the US for her college education.

We’ve been in Ireland for seven years, and both from a personal and practical standpoint, it has been the right choice. Ireland’s culture, beauty, and sense of community have made it a second home, and we couldn’t be happier.

Conclusion

Life changes, and the choice to move to a new country is one of the most significant. Ireland, with its rich history, warm welcome, and unparalleled quality of life, was the perfect fit for us. Whether driven by political, personal, or familial reasons, our journey to Ireland demonstrates the importance of making choices that align with one's values and aspirations. If you’re considering a move, remember that sometimes the path to a better future is as simple as following your heart.
