Why Moving Back to Hungary is a Good Idea: Insights from an Ex-Resident

How Bad is It to Live in Hungary: Insights from an Ex-Resident

I’ve been living in Ireland and the United States for 10 years, mostly in Dublin, with a few years in the U.S.A. In 2008, at the age of 23, I left Hungary with the conviction of never coming back again. But as time passed, I realized that life is not a fairy tale, and I began to understand the world, economy, society, and other cultures a lot better. Today, I’m excited to move back to Hungary because:

Safe and Positive Living Conditions

Hungary is a safe country filled with numerous job opportunities, offering various chances to gain experience in different sectors. Compared to some Western countries, such as Ireland, Italy, Spain, and the USA, Hungary is cleaner. While Ireland struggles with issues like homelessness, Hungary has no 'junkie zombies' or excessive drug use, and alcohol consumption is also lower. This makes Hungary a more socially responsible and healthy environment.

The ‘if you don’t work, you don’t eat’ mindset prevalent in Hungary is something I appreciate. Unlike in Ireland, where social welfare can become a burden on taxpayers, people in Hungary are driven by the need to work to survive. This hardworking culture is deeply rooted in the society.

Climate, Culture, and Food

Hungary boasts a wonderful climate and a vibrant culture, rich in gastronomy. The climate is temperate, which means you can enjoy fresh and tasty fruits and vegetables all year round. It is easy to find homemade ingredients for meals, and there are several hidden holiday resorts close to nature, which are both peaceful and inexpensive. The climate in Hungary is less harsh than in Ireland, making it a more appealing choice for those seeking a pleasant living environment.

The healthcare system in Hungary is far from the best, but it does exist and is accessible. Unlike in Ireland, where medical services are paid for at very high prices, in Hungary, you can receive basic medical services through a state insurance system.

Pros and Cons

Living in Hungary comes with both advantages and disadvantages. People tend to complain a lot and can be quite envious. There are many stereotypes and prejudices that are prevalent in the society. However, wages have improved significantly over the past five years, and I am optimistic about the future.

Despite the social and economic challenges, it’s important to note that these issues are improving. Hungary is on the right track to become a better place to live. As a resident, it’s necessary to have a positive attitude and focus on the progress being made. Politicians are certainly a topic of discussion, but it’s best to keep your mind clear and focused on the improvements that they are working towards.

Conclusion

In conclusion, living in Hungary offers a unique experience that is different from what you might find in Western countries. While it has its challenges, it also has many advantages that make it an attractive choice for those who are looking for a peaceful, affordable, and clean living environment. If you're considering a move to Hungary, the benefits certainly outweigh the drawbacks.
