Why Did I Not Choose Agriculture and What's the Future for Farmers?

Especially for those living in coastal areas, where watching space launches is a common pastime, agriculture might not immediately appeal. Growing up on the Space Coast of Florida, my childhood was filled with the excitement of shuttle launches, but my dreams were far removed from the daily grind of farming.

Farm Huts and Child Dreams

Florida is famous for its citrus groves and ranches, but as a child, I didn't have any personal connection to these industries. My extended family stretching from New York to Texas and Florida had no farms or ranches. Back-breaking labor and the high risk of bankruptcy made the agricultural sector an unappealing choice in my eyes.

My interest lay in materials engineering, specifically how it supports the aerospace industry. Although my current role doesn't involve space systems directly, I find my work engaging, and I can often observe these impressive launches from my workplace, which is located at Kennedy Space Center.

Personal Farmers’ Journey

Despite my appreciation for the farmers who ensure our food supply, I wouldn't wish such a life on anyone. Personal choice and circumstance often dictate career paths, and I believe my journey offers a unique perspective on the challenges faced by farmers.

After my father's illness, I made the difficult decision to leave behind my city life and move back to his ancestral village to fulfill his wish. The experience of farming alone for three years was both rewarding and challenging. Each crop's needs, from water to nutrients, had to be observed and managed carefully. However, with the right crops, I managed to earn enough to sustain my family. However, my efforts were short-lived. In just six years, the government's policies drastically affected the agricultural sector, leading to financial ruin.Eventually, I was compelled to return to the city in search of employment and to support both my family and my father's needs.

The Future of Agriculture

As technology continues to advance, the future of farming is becoming more complex. Automation, precision agriculture, and biotechnology offer opportunities to boost productivity and sustainability, but they also present challenges. Young people, often attracted by technological advancements in the space industry, might be less inclined to pursue careers in agriculture. My case illustrates how the changing dynamics of the agricultural sector can impact those deeply invested in it.

Conclusion

The agricultural sector faces unique challenges that can be hard to overcome. While it's crucial to recognize the importance of farmers in our food supply chain, it's equally important to address the barriers they face. Understanding and supporting these challenges can help ensure a sustainable future for agriculture.
