Unusual Incidents Highlighted in Medical X-Rays
It's amazing what can be found inside a patient's body through medical x-rays. From small, innocent objects that children swallow to intentional stunts performed, the stories that emerge are as intriguing as they are unforgettable.
Familiar Yet Unexpected Finds
Common objects that get swallowed or inserted into the body are usually what one would expect – small toys, coins, or even small rubber erasers found in children's pencils. However, these incidents can sometimes take a surprising turn. An example from my time in ENT (Ear, Nose, and Throat) involved a patient who had managed to get a diamond embedded in their ear! Additionally, there were instances of a golf ball being swallowed and expelled due to a muscle spasm, which are usually straightforward but always keep the medical staff on their toes.
Another noteworthy case was when an adult accidentally swallowed a dart – one specifically used to be thrown at a dartboard. X-rays confirmed the dart was lodged in the upper oesophagus. However, a more peculiar scene unfolded when the patient had a dart taped to his upper back, visible on the X-ray. The medical team wondered what the patient's motivation could have been.
Intentional and Deliberate Acts
The world of medical x-rays also includes cases of deliberate ingested and inserted objects. One of the more unique incidents was a scenario where a patient tried to place a small whiskey glass inside their rectum, but couldn't retrieve it. The methods used and their outcomes often lead to questions and speculation about the patients' motivations and reasoning.
Mysterious Incidents
One of the most memorable images I read was a pelvic x-ray of a male patient with pieces of birdshot in his genitalia. Birdshot, a form of buckshot but much smaller, seemed like a bizarre and unsettling discovery. The story behind these injuries remains a mystery – it was described as an incident where the husband found his partner in bed with the patient.
Inadvertent Incidents
Occasionally, medical staff come across unexpected finds that reveal interesting backstories. A prime example is a story from my residency days, where a patient was brought into the ER after a car accident. A thorough X-ray of the body was conducted, but something critical was overlooked – the pelvic area. As the patient was being monitored, a technologist wheeled in a massive, ancient x-ray machine to capture the pelvic area. Upon arrival, the patient was having their temperature taken – from the rectum!
Remarkably, the technician noted in the x-ray report: 'Examination of the pelvis reveals no evidence of fracture. A thermometer is in the patients rectum. The patients temperature is normal.' This incident showcases how overlooked details can lead to surreal and humorous medical observations.
Conclusion
The stories and incidents detailed highlight the real-life scenarios that doctors and medical professionals frequently encounter. While many of these cases are puzzling and sometimes even humorous, they all serve as a reminder of the importance of thorough medical procedures and the unexpected resolutions that can arise.
