Understanding a Bonus Room: Its Definition and Uses
The term bonus room has been heard for years, but it can be a somewhat vague concept. Essentially, a bonus room is an additional living space in a home that is not specifically dedicated to a single purpose. It is a versatile area that can be transformed to fit multiple functions, much like a multi-purpose room.
Origins of the Term
The concept of a bonus room often originated from the spaces left over in a house when the original designs were finalized. For example, over the years, builders would add a space above a garage, finish it, and present it as a TV/game room. This space was considered bonus space because it looked attractive and offered extra functionality without taking up valuable living space elsewhere in the house.
What Constitutes a Bonus Room?
A bonus room is not always identified with a clear purpose. It can be:
A finished attic that does not meet the criteria for a bedroom (e.g., improper egress or lack of proper closets). A basement room with no specific use, often labeled as a bonus room to avoid confusion. A space that was finished off in an area that was not originally part of the house's design, often done without permits. In some cases, a bonus room can simply be a room that is too large to have a designated purpose. For instance, a house that is so spacious that it runs out of room names for all living areas.
Common Uses of a Bonus Room
A bonus room can be repurposed into various functional areas:
Suitable for a 5th bedroom, especially if the house has a septic system rated for only four bedrooms. A space that wasn't originally finished or permitted, like a basement or garage area. A family room or a multi-functional area. A sewing or hobby room. An game room or home cinema. An office or den.For instance, at my home, I have a large sunroom that is often considered a bonus room. It is neither a bedroom, nor a dining room, nor a family room, thus making it a versatile bonus room.
The “Anything Room” Concept
A bonus room is often described as an “anything room.” It is usually an unexpected area in a house that does not have a specific purpose. It might be a loft, an attic, or a space built above a garage. The key characteristic is that it lacks a closet and a window, which rules out the possibility of it being classified as a bedroom.
With this in mind, a bonus room is a true anything room. You can make it whatever you need it to be, making it a valuable addition to any home.
