Understanding Suffering: Beyond God's Plan or Satan's Scheme?
Suffering is a common experience in life that many individuals struggle to comprehend. The question often arises: is suffering part of God's plan for humanity, or is it a strategic tool used by Satan to draw people away from God?
The Perspective of Perfection
The concept that suffering is not part of God's plan is rooted in the belief that humanity was created in a state of perfection. Genesis 1:26–28 describes humanity as God's stewards for the Earth, living in harmony and prosperity. However, this perfection was compromised when Adam and Eve sinned by eating from the Tree of Knowledge, as stated in Genesis 3:1–5. This act of disobedience brought sin, suffering, and ultimately death upon all generations (Romans 5:12).
God's Role in Suffering
Some interpretations suggest that God permits suffering for a time to test and refine human beings. Revelation 21:4 mentions that evil, sickness, old age, and death will be things of the past with eternity in view. However, this perspective emphasizes that God observes how individuals handle their suffering: do they blame Him, seek strength, or rage against life's injustices?
Jesus, who experienced suffering, endured trials to show that He was a faithful and compassionate king (Hebrews 2:18). Instead of removing suffering, God offers His strength and support, as illustrated through Jesus' life and teachings (Philippians 4:13).
The Role of Satan in Human Suffering
According to the Bible, Satan's actions are central to the enduring nature of suffering on Earth. The New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures particularly emphasizes Satan's role in causing human suffering. 1 Peter 5:8 states, 'Be of sober spirit, be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.' This portrayal of Satan as an adversary actively seeks to destroy humanity.
The devil's influence is worldwide, as stated in 1 John 5:19. Since the fall, his influence has intensified, as evidenced by the banishment after the war in Heaven (Revelation 12:7–9). This ongoing conflict between God and Satan highlights why suffering persists in the world.
Addressing Unseen Circumstances and Human Mistakes
While Satan's influence is significant, Bible verses also attribute suffering to human imperfection and unforeseen circumstances. Jeremiah 10:23 suggests that mankind is always prone to error, leading to suffering. Ecclesiastes 9:11 indicates that sometimes, people find themselves in precarious situations through no fault of their own, resulting in accidental suffering or even death.
