Understanding Myself Without Career or Background

Understanding Myself Without Career or Background

One day, I witnessed a fascinating confrontation between my cockapoo Archie and a silky terrier named Sydney Bobo. Bobo, a tiny and feisty little dog, immediately asserted his dominance over Archie. Intrigued by this display, I realized that my perceptions of Archie as a submissive creature were merely stereotypes based on his demeanor in different contexts. This encounter highlighted a different side of Archie's personality - one that emphasized self-esteem and confidence.

Bobo sniffed around Archie's bed and played with his toys, while Archie watched him silently. When Bobo went to take Archie's toy, an old half-chewed stuffed owl, Archie stood his ground, putting himself in Bobo's path and refusing to let the Silky Sydney move. Bobo, sensing this defiance, growled louder, but Archie remained calm. Realizing that Archie wasn't intimidated, Bobo eventually let go of the toy and walked away. Archie then walked away to his crate, asserting his claim to the toy.

This episode taught me that Archie, who is gentle and submissive in regular situations, actually possesses rock-solid self-esteem and confidence. It made me reflect on my own understanding of myself and the dynamics of my personality.

Layback and Strong Self-Esteem

Like Archie, I too am a laid-back individual but not someone who lacks strength. I am impulsive at times, but not rash. While I am sensitive, I do not interfere needlessly with others. According to my daughter, I have a tenacious 'saviour complex' that I constantly strive to work on. This 'saviour complex' likely stems from a deep-seated desire to help others, but it can sometimes lead to overstepping boundaries.

The incident with Archie serves as a reminder that our true selves can often be revealed in unexpected moments. It’s not about the labels we carry or the backgrounds we come from, but rather, about the core aspects of our personalities that define us. Understanding these core traits can help us to be more self-aware and lead to personal growth.

Lessons and Reflections

This experience with Archie has made me realize that it’s important to look beyond surface-level observations and understand the complexities of our own and others' personalities. Archie’s stand against Bobo demonstrated that sometimes, it’s beneficial to hold one’s ground and stand up for oneself, especially when a point is being made.

As for myself, I need to balance my sensitivity and a desire to help with the recognition that not everyone will value or appreciate my interference. This balance is crucial for maintaining healthy relationships and contributing positively to my environment.

Ultimately, the encounter with Archie reinforced the importance of self-understanding and self-esteem. Whether in my interactions with others or in personal development, having a strong sense of self can help us navigate life’s challenges more effectively.
