Unacceptable Normalizations That Disappoint and Disappoint Us

Unacceptable Normalizations That Disappoint and Disappoint Us

As a 21-year-old, I have encountered numerous behaviors that are normalized but should not be. These societal norms and practices not only disappoint but also harm individuals in ways that are often overlooked.

Normalization of Inappropriate Behaviors

There are several behaviors that are increasingly normalized yet are inherently wrong. Cheating, especially in relationships, is one such concern. I have witnessed firsthand the harmful consequences of cheating, particularly in married relationships. It is appalling how people make fun of someone who suspects their partner of infidelity and even question a woman's worth in satisfying her partner. This behavior is not only disrespectful but also contributes to a culture of disrespect and undermines trust in relationships.

The Harm of Body-Shaming

The incessant body-shaming of others, regardless of their weight or skin color, is another troubling trend. People seem to have forgotten that everyone is unique, and body image should not be a source of criticism. Overt or covert remarks about someone's body, whether made in jest or with intent, can severely impact an individual's self-esteem and mental health. It takes years to build self-confidence, but it only takes a moment for someone else's words to shatter it.

Domestic Violence and Toxic Behavior

Domestic violence and toxic behavior in relationships are further examples of normalized behaviors that should not be. I have been fortunate enough to grow up in a respectful household, but I have also witnessed and heard about numerous cases where husbands resort to violence, especially when under the influence of alcohol. While I have advised my friends against tolerating such behavior, I have also noticed that some individuals normalize and even justify such actions. It is crucial to stand firm in supporting individuals who are victims of such abuse and to work towards changing societal norms that tolerate such behavior.

Respecting Boundaries and Privacy

Two additional areas where normalization is particularly concerning are inappropriate touching and invading personal privacy. It is imperative to respect people's consent before touching them, as the invasiveness of certain actions can be deeply detrimental to an individual's well-being. Similarly, people should refrain from peeping into others' devices or invading their personal space without permission, as it represents a serious breach of trust and privacy.

Roast Culture

A new and sometimes detrimental trend is the acceptance and encouragement of body shaming and insulting others, often under the guise of humor. The phrase "Just kidding" is often used to excuse such harmful behavior, but it fails to acknowledge the severe mental and emotional impact such actions can have on others. It is crucial to recognize that making someone feel inferior or worthless can have serious long-lasting effects, and such behavior must be discouraged.

Encouraging Kindness and Empathy

In conclusion, it is essential to challenge and change the normalization of behaviors that are toxic, disrespectful, and harmful. Instead, we should strive to promote a culture of respect, consent, and empathy. Everyone deserves to be treated with kindness and dignity, and by standing up against these normalized behaviors, we can create a more compassionate and supportive society. Remember, your words and actions can have a profound impact on those around you, and we should all strive to be a 'rope of kindness' for those who are falling at the edge.
