Tuscany vs. Scotland: A September Dilemma
I often debate between Tuscany and Scotland for my September travels. After visiting both in October and enjoying trips through their beautiful countryside by car and train, I find that Tuscany stands out as a more suitable choice in September. Let me explain why.
Weather Considerations
While both regions offer breathtaking views and amazing experiences, the weather plays a significant role in my decision. Tuscany, particularly in the second half of September, offers the perfect climate. Contrast this with Scotland, where September can still be quite chilly and often rainy. Tuscany, on the other hand, still enjoys picture-perfect weather, making it a more inviting destination.
Travel Experiences
Traveling through both regions, I was particularly drawn to Tuscany, with its charming villages such as Lucca. Florence, my preference, is also more enjoyable in September without the overwhelming crowds. Umbria, just beyond Tuscany, offers a similar charm and is equally captivating, albeit not as popular with tourists. Bologna, Perugia, and Assisi, all nearby, provide additional attractions without the rush of Tuscany's main cities.
Activities and Experiences
While Tuscany is wonderful, Scotland offers unique experiences too. Scottish fall brings shorter days and intriguing nights, perfect for hearty meals and drinks. Edinburgh, in particular, is spectacular throughout the year but especially during New Year's Eve.
However, for those who enjoy the thrill of budget air travel, combining a visit to Edinburgh and Florence can be a fantastic plan. Ryanair makes it possible to experience both places in just two weeks. This not only gets you the best of both worlds but also allows you to taste and compare local delicacies. For instance, enjoying osso buco in Florence and haggis in Edinburgh, or Campari in Tuscany and Scotch in Scotland, adds an extra layer of cultural immersion.
Tuscany in September: The Ideal Time
September in Tuscany is less hectic and more enjoyable, especially the first half when the weather is still warm. The latter part, from mid-September to late September, is considered the most perfect time. It's a fantastic opportunity to explore the region's gorgeous architecture, art collections, and excellent cuisine and wine. Florence, although much trafficked, is a must-visit for its cultural and artistic heritage, but you should plan to stay for only one or two days.
Another advantage of visiting Tuscany in September is that it offers a chance to explore lesser-known areas with lower tourist congestion. The Lucca region, for example, presents a lovely proper city with a charming surrounding area that is both beautiful and less frequented. Prices are also more reasonably priced, making it an ideal time to enjoy a memorable trip.
