The Power of Plantation: A Goal to Save the Environment with Trees

The recent weekend saw a community effort to plant 6,000 trees, and I, myself, have been involved in planting over 100 trees. Some have grown large enough to harvest, showcasing the tangible benefits of our efforts. However, the enthusiasm for this endeavor requires continuous nurturing, as many trees fail to establish themselves before dying.

Are Trees the Best for Reducing Pollution?

It's true that trees are valuable, yet they are not the most efficient method for reducing pollution. The most effective approach is to prevent pollution in the first place. Simply planting more trees around the world, even if it means giving up a substantial portion of farmland, would have minimal impact on pollution levels.

According to experts, daily planting activities can vary widely, with some reaching up to 5,000 trees per day. While planting more trees is certainly beneficial, it's important to focus on the challenge of nurturing these trees so they can thrive. Integrating the act of planting and caring for trees can lead to a sustainable lifestyle and a healthier environment.

Planting Trees: Easy but Challenging

Planting trees is undoubtedly a good step towards environmental preservation, but simply planting a tree is just the beginning. The real challenge lies in fostering its growth and survival. Many newly planted trees die due to lack of proper care, which often means regular watering and maintenance, not just the initial planting.

Given the high number of trees that die, is it possible that planting instead of adopting trees might be a more sustainable approach? By adopting a tree, you take on the responsibility of its care, which ensures it thrives and contributes to a healthier environment. This initiative requires awareness and continuous effort to ensure success.

A Personal Mission: Encouraging Tree Plantation

My experience in promoting tree plantation among young university students has been particularly rewarding. When I served as the Assistant Director General of Education in Delhi and the Director of Agricultural Universities nationwide, I made tree planting a mandatory activity on university campuses.

Students at Nagaland University, a remote location, displayed significant enthusiasm for tree planting activities. Later, when I became the Vice Chancellor at Kanpur, I set a goal to plant at least 3,000 trees over three years. To achieve this sustainably, we relied on willing volunteers and minimal funding. To our surprise, students took the initiative, completing the first year’s goal of 1,000 trees quickly and demonstrating ongoing commitment through regular care and maintenance.

This mission is still active, with current efforts focused on continuing advice, plant supply, and support. By involving students in these initiatives, we can create a lasting impact and ensure that tree care becomes a collective responsibility.

Join us in this mission to conserve the environment through tree planting and care, and let's make a difference together.
