The Most Unmet Need in Our Community: Youth Engagement and Entertainment

As a member of this community, I have often felt a deep sense of sadness and concern over the unmet needs of our youth. The elder generation and those in positions of power seem to view our children as unseen and unheard, potentially threatening the community's stability. However, there is a striking contrast between our past and present approaches to engaging and entertaining our young people.

Behind the Lack of Engagement

The root of this issue appears to lie in fear and mistrust. There is a widespread belief that organizing our youth could lead to organized threats against the community. Unfortunately, the lack of opportunities for healthy engagement and activity has pushed many young individuals to seek their own, less than ideal, forms of entertainment such as unhealthy social activities or more dangerous pastimes.

Historical Context and Contrast

Our community wasn't always this way. Looking back to my childhood, I recall a time when we were more accepting of and welcoming to our youth. The local library hosted various programs designed to engage children and find healthy outlets for their leisure. Small businesses thrived on their open-door policies and promoted themselves as friendly spaces where kids could find activities and socialize. Community events and festivities further demonstrated a time when the community deeply cared about the well-being and development of our children.

Current Shortcomings

Fast forward to present times, and these aspects have declined significantly. The library, once a crucial hub for young people, now lacks spaces dedicated specifically to teenagers. The renovations have transformed the library into a space dominated by adult meeting tables, leaving little room for the youth. The once-friendly local businesses no longer extend the same warm welcome to children. Our community has taken a turn, branding our youth as suspicious and untrustworthy when they visit public spaces such as parks.

It is deeply disheartening to see that the only place with space and activities for young people is the local high school. Even this arena has suffered significant deterioration due to the loss of many beloved and active educators and staff members. This situation leaves our youth feeling neglected and unwelcome in their own community. There is indeed a profound unmet need that we must address.

Our Community's Future and Hope for Change

My heart aches to think about the future of this community. We possess a rich and vibrant culture that deserves to be preserved and passed down to future generations. However, without a nurturing environment for our youth, there is little hope that this community will thrive and continue to grow. Our youth should feel a strong sense of belonging and acceptance, and it is our duty to create spaces and opportunities that foster this sentiment.

It is disheartening to see that our community, which once cherished and welcomed our youth, has now turned its back on them. The lack of a clear support system, combined with the fear of potential threats, has led to a significant unmet need. We must come together to address this issue and provide our young people with the resources and platforms they need to develop into productive and engaged members of society.

Our youth are the future of this community. By addressing this unmet need, we can ensure that our community remains vibrant, lively, and truly attuned to the needs of all its members. It is time to embrace and celebrate our youth, providing them with the support and opportunities they deserve.
