The Joys of Foraging: My Favorite Fruit from Nature

In the world of fruits found in nature, there is an incredible abundance of flavors and varieties to explore. This article delves into the personal favorites of foraging, including elderberry, blackberry, and fig, providing a detailed guide for those interested in foraging in their local areas.

Elderberry: A Natural Gem

Three or four elderberry trees grow on the edge of a defunct farm near me, having weathered 75 to 100 years of growth. Although these trees yield modestly, their berries are of the highest quality. Elderberries are not only delicious but also packed with health benefits, making them a delightful forage.

A Spectrum of Fruits

Currently, the world of fruits is abundant with a variety of delicious options. Peach, plum, nectarine, cherry, grape, melon, orange, and apple are just a few of the many fruits available. Along with elderberry and blackberry, there are numerous other fruits available for foraging. If you live in an area with diverse ecosystems, you might find even more fruits to explore.

Collecting and Foraging: A Family Affair

As a family, we venture out to collect chestnuts, hazelnuts, and blackberries. These natural fruits not only add to our diet but also provide a sense of community and tradition. Blackberries, in particular, hold a special place in my heart, as I recall fond memories of collecting them with my son. Getting hands and faces smeared with red juice while making jam, blackberry pie, or a summer fruit pudding with homegrown strawberries is a cherished experience.

The Enchantment of Figs

Figs, with their unique flavor and nutritional benefits, are a favorite in my foraging journeys. Figs are not just a single fruit but an aggregation of small fruits, which makes them a fascinating botanical wonder. Figs are suitable for eating in moderation, as 3-4 can satisfy cravings. The edible skin of a mature green fig is light green, while violet or mixed color varieties are equally delicious. Figs are versatile and can also be enjoyed as a flavor in ice cream. They originate from the Mediterranean basin and Western Asia but have been spread worldwide due to their adaptability.

Thimble Berries and the Humboldt Redwood Preserve

During my foraging adventures, I’ve also discovered thimble berries, which are found in the Humboldt Redwood Preserve. These berries, about the size of a thimble, fit perfectly over your fingers and are incredibly delicious. They add a unique flavor to any dish and are a must-try for anyone exploring the natural fruits of the foraging world.

Exploring nature for fruits is not only a way to enjoy delicious flavors but also a connection to a simpler, more natural way of living. Whether you are foraging elderberries, blackberries, or figs, remember to always respect the environment and follow local guidelines to ensure the sustainability of natural resources.
