The Joy in Simplicity: Why People Relish in the Small Things

Why Do People Say They Enjoy Simple Things in Life?

A Perspective on Simplicity and Joy

Is it true that simple things bring the most joy? It's often said, but is it really true? Perhaps simple things do bring joy, but they do so in a unique and complex way. This article explores why many people find enjoyment in the lesser-known pleasures of life, from petting a cat to walking through the woods.

Take, for example, the simple act of feeding a cat, dog, or birds. These moments are cherished not just because they're simple, but because they're moments spent in the present, appreciating the here and now. People might say, 'I enjoy the chirp of a bird or walking through a forest.' However, in reality, everything in life is intricate and part of this vast universe. True simplicity does not exist, as everything is interconnected and complex.

Exploring the Complexities of Joy

My greatest joys are often described as 'weird,' and this is because joy is a mixed emotion. Joy can coexist with other emotions like anger, sadness, or wonder. For instance, holding a curious leaf for 30 seconds can bring a sense of peace and joy. The joy of preparing wood for the fireplace is another moment of mixed emotion—feeling both content and at peace. Visiting my grandmother and seeing her cry when I leave, even though it brings sadness, also brings a deep sense of joy knowing she cares about me so much.

One of the most fulfilling joys for me comes from petting our husky. Seeing her lubber her tongue out in a way that signifies she is feeling good clearly brings me immense joy. However, on the flip side, moments like graduating, moving away from home, or starting to drive do not evoke any significant emotion for me. This has led me to conclude that people generally seek contentment and a sense of peace. Once they achieve that, they naturally look for other emotions like thrill. These small pleasures in life are only truly noticed when we are more settled and appreciative.

The Key Elements of Contentment

Contentment, or feeling settled and at peace, can be achieved in various ways. Whether it's through nature, family, or other sources of care and understanding, the key is the human connection and shared experience. Even those who travel frequently and lead adventurous lives can still find moments of profound joy, often stemming from the simplest interactions.

So, as you walk around and notice the small things, embrace them. Appreciate the sound of a bird chirping, the warmth of the sun, or the moment when your loved one smiles at you. These are the joys that make life truly worthwhile. Remember, the path to contentment often lies in the smallest and simplest of moments.
