The Importance of Leg Exercises for a Balanced Body
Ahhh, so you’re going to be one of those ‘chicken-leg’ guys!! Sooooo unappealing. I prefer a balanced look, and 2/3 of your muscle mass is in the lower half of your body!!
The Benefits of Working Out Your Legs
When you work out your legs, you’ll be stressing more muscle mass in general. You will experience more calorie-burning after you leave the gym, which will contribute to the development of a more lean body with a lower body fat percentage.
When you engage all of the muscle groups in your body, you'll improve your athleticism, as well as your muscle and bone mass. A strong lower body will also help prevent injuries/falls and make your metabolic engine more efficient.
Get started with some basic leg exercises like squats, lunges, deadlifts, leg presses, and calf raises. Engage in leg workouts at least twice a week, and you’ll love how you look.
Maintaining a Balanced Muscle Mass
The main benefit is that you're not ignoring more than a third of your muscle mass and tendon structures. That’s a lot of muscle and several joints that you’re effectively ignoring.
If you’re athletic or want to be athletic in any capacity, you need to train your legs. If you want to prevent or at least reduce the severity of injuries in your feet, ankles, knees, and hips, you need to train your legs. If you want to look balanced in terms of muscle mass, you need to train your legs. If you want a big bench press, you need to train your legs – watch how powerlifters bench. If you don’t want to deal with snickers from passerbys at the gym because you have a top-heavy appearance and a big upper body with tiny legs, you want to train your legs.
I've honestly never understood the dilemma and why guys, especially, would ever not train legs on purpose. It’s like getting bodywork done on the hood, front quarter panels, and front doors of your car but leaving the back to rust and rot. Why would you do this?
I just don’t understand why you wouldn’t train the whole body. If you’re going to train, train. The better question is ‘what’s the benefit of only working out your upper body’ or ‘why avoid training legs’.
If you tell me that training legs feels harder, I’d tell you that making things feel easier is basically the underlying point of training. When you face challenges and overcome them, you not only build muscle but also resilience and confidence.
