The Dual Life: A Top 1 Wealthy Person's Perspective
The world population stands at approximately 8 billion, of which 1 person represents a mere 0.0001% of the total population. Being one of the top 1 wealthiest people in the world or in America is an experience that is often shrouded in mystery. While it is indeed a significant milestone, the life of someone in this echelon is far from the glamorous stereotype that it is often painted to be.
Background and Understanding
My journey started as the founder and CEO of a large company. After decades of contributing to the world of business, I now lead a retired life outside of the USA. Many of us grow up dreaming about the luxurious lifestyles and immense wealth that the 'rich and famous' often portray. However, my experience with being one of the top 1 wealthy people is not as conventional as it may appear. It is simply a way of life. I don't describe it more than as it is!
The Global Rich Picture
It is estimated that approximately 800 million people make up the world's population. Out of these, about 1 in 800 million, or roughly 0.0001%, fall into the top 1 wealth bracket. This means that the top 1 represents a significant portion of the population in developed countries. Taking this into account, about 55 million people are in “the developed countries,” with roughly 25 million living in the USA. This roughly translates to about a tenth of the US population and showcases the reality that there are indeed a substantial number of people in this bracket.
While the top 1 may seem like a small fraction of the population, the irony is that one individual in a thousand lives a life of unimaginable wealth, yet does not realize the vast disparity that exists between them and the majority of the population. For instance, most of the fortune I inherited from my great-grandpa, who belonged to a royal family, is in land and properties, including hundreds of new apartment complexes and a major development company. Yet, I make a point to live an ordinary life, renting a one-bedroom flat far from the city center and using public transportation. Even my son is unaware of my immense wealth.
The Contradiction in Everyday Life
It's not uncommon for people to inherit immense wealth, as I did. In fact, many top earners may be among the top 0.0001% of the world's population. The life of a top 1 wealthy person is often a paradox; while I have access to tremendous resources, I also recognize the stark reality of the disparity that exists between my lifestyle and that of the average person. For instance, when I walk my son to school, I see richer parents dropping their children off and giving them money to buy food after school. These parents are often busy heading to crucial business meetings, while I am simply there for my child's education and upbringing.
Many of us dream of growing up in a poor family, with a mother who cooks for us and reads books with us, and a father who takes us to the forest after school. My hope is that my son has a happy childhood and learns that it is possible to enjoy life without living in luxurious apartments or wearing branded clothes. This is not just a personal dream, but a realization that wealth is not the sole determinant of a happy and meaningful life.
The Quora Phenomenon
Becoming a millionaire on a platform like Quora is a testament to the democratization of wealth in the 21st century. While the stereotype may be that only those with immense wealth can be found on Quora, in reality, any person who owns one car and has a place to live can be considered among the top 1 in their local community. The journey from rags to riches or from a modest beginning to immense wealth is often the result of hustle, resilience, and a little bit of luck.
In conclusion, the experience of being one of the top 1 wealthiest people in America or the world is multifaceted, involving both privilege and the stark realization of wealth disparity. While the life of a top 1 wealthy person may seem glamorous, it is essential to recognize the individuals behind the fortune and the realities they face. Philanthropy and public perception play crucial roles in mitigating the gap between the haves and have-nots, ensuring that financial success translates into a fulfilling and meaningful life for all.
