The Devotion of Meera: A Legendary Journey of Love and Faith
Every question posed to me—or any individual—about the love for Krishna between Radharani and Meera has been argued and explored for centuries. While I am no judge of whose love for Krishna is greater, this piece aims to reflect on who inspires me the most.
Both Radharani and Meera had their own unique and profound places in Krishna's world. Radharani, being in His physical presence for a significant time, and having spent the rest of her days in deep yearning and longing for Krishna, holds a special place in my heart. However, Meera's story resonates more deeply with me for a different reason.
Meera's Unseen Love
Meera, born in the 16th century in the lap of luxury as a Rajput princess, was absorbed in her love for Krishna. Unlike Radharani, she had not seen Krishna as a child, yet she loved Him intensely. This love is born out of complete innocence and an unwavering faith. Meera never questioned the existence of Krishna; her devotion began merely by seeing an enchanting idol of Him.
Her story is a testament to the idea that wherever a devotee resides, be it a palace or a hut, becomes as sacred as Vrindavan. Meera's path was fraught with tragedies, yet her unwavering love for Krishna remained steadfast. From losing her mother in childhood, facing battles and bereavements, to being married against her will and subsequently faced with hostility from her husband and family, Meera's resilience is truly inspiring.
Devotion Amidst Trials
Meera faced numerous challenges, including attempts on her life, as she continued her devotion to Krishna. Her in-laws were harsh and disapproving, but Meera's love for Krishna was so fierce that she dared to defy traditional norms, singing and dancing in public before the idol of Krishna, regardless of the gender, caste, or creed of those who attended her spiritual gatherings.
Though born into luxury, Meera lived as a true Yogini, a female renunciant, transcending body consciousness and fear. She stood strong, unshaken by the world's condemnation and persecution. Her story teaches us not to be meek before anyone, be it parents or in-laws, especially when on the spiritual path. Her unwavering devotion is a beacon of hope for anyone struggling with opposition.
Legacy of Meera
Meera's courage is exemplified in her decision to leave her husband's and parents' homes, venturing into unknown territories like Vrindavan in a time of Islamic invasions. She flowed over any obstacle placed in her path, merging with her devotion to Krishna.
Meera's legacy teaches us to continue our devotional practices even amidst opposition, to go forward with one-pointed dedication, to let the world say what it will, to keep our mind on Krishna alone, and to not forget the ultimate purpose of life even when our loved ones have passed away.
Pranams to one of the greatest women mystics of India, Meera, who demonstrated the highest form of devotion to Krishna, proving beyond doubt that she was no ordinary mortal.
