The Challenges and Rewards of Sunday School Teaching
Teaching Sunday School during my undergraduate years was a profound experience that taught me valuable lessons. The role comes with its unique set of challenges and rewards, especially when balancing faith and communication with young minds.
The Initial Call
My journey began when I received a call to teach at a local Sunday School. At the time, I had just completed my undergraduate studies, and the Sunday School seemed like the perfect opportunity to delve into religious education and mentor young individuals.
My students primarily came from the lecturer's families, and I had a small but dedicated group of eight young learners each Sunday. One of my favorite topics was exploring the creation story in the Bible, emphasizing the importance of taking care of animals, plants, and the environment. I also instilled in them the value of love and responsibility, which resonated with the young minds.
Challenges and Prayers
A significant challenge arose when I had to take up a government volunteer position in a remote village far from my home. The villagers were predominantly Muslim, which presented a different set of cultural and religious dynamics. The village required me to wake up early, around 5 AM, for a one-hour journey to the nearest church, where I would later meet with families and share my experiences.
Despite my initial apprehensions, the support of my Sunday School students bolstered my resolve. On one particular Sunday, they prayed for my safety, and one student even prayed that Lord Jesus would protect me from harm. Their sincere prayers made my decision to stay in the village easier and more meaningful. This experience highlighted the importance of community support and reinforced my belief in the power of faith.
The Far-Reaching Impact
After three months, I returned to Ambon and met with a parent of one of my pupils. He mentioned that Jerry, one of my students, was now working in Borneo at a private company. Interestingly, the parent explained that Jerry's granddad was a priest, which likely contributed to his wisdom and devotion. This interaction reinforced the idea that religious education plays a crucial role in shaping individuals' values and perspectives.
Fast forward a few years, and many of my Sunday School pupils have achieved remarkable success. One student went on to study in Russia, while another became a medical doctor. All are devout Christians, and their achievements bring great joy to me, as a former Sunday School teacher.
Continuing Ministry and Mentorship
Currently, I continue my ministry in Bogor, serving as a mentor and adviser to inspired students, particularly those with a Christian background. I encourage them to strive for excellence and share my experiences with them. My favorite piece of advice is that whatever task you undertake, do it for the glory of God. This approach has not only guided my students but has also shaped my own approach to ministry and service.
