Teachers Abuse of Power: When Innocence Meets Unfair Discipline

Teachers Abuse of Power: When Innocence Meets Unfair Discipline

When children are in school, they expect to be taught, coached, and protected. Unfortunately, some students find themselves unjustly disciplined by their teachers, a situation that is both disappointing and frustrating. Here are two personal stories that illustrate instances where young students faced unnecessary punishments without wrongdoing.

Grade 3 Incident - Recorder Roll-ons

It was a Grade 3 school show, where every class got the chance to display their musical talents. We played recorders, but several kids behind me were rolling them on the floor, making a lot of noise. I thought they were being disrespectful and asked them to stop. However, when my teacher saw me holding a recorder on the floor, she only saw me as the one to blame. Even more frustratingly, she made me write an apology letter to the performing class. This experience, despite my youth, still makes me angry to this day.

8th Grade Myspace Scandal

During my 8th grade, I witnessed a classmate misusing a printer for an illegal activity. I didn't get involved, but I shared the URL detail with my teacher, Ms Drum, to help identify the responsible party. Ms Drum took my suggestion, but then accused me of being the one who did it. She even proceeded to write me up for confessing to her. After sending me to the office, I felt compelled to express my frustration in a detailed letter to her. I pointed out her misuse of power and even went to the extent of warning that if she reported the letter as a threat, it would just confirm my distrust in her as an educator. My warning did not prevent the letter from being given to the dean, and I was given an suspension for breaking into her office, according to the dean. Unfair as it was, the story highlights how teachers' misuse of power can harm students unnecessarily.

Conclusion

Unfortunately, there are too many instances where teachers overstep their authority and create challenging situations for their students. It's important for students and parents to know their rights and seek support when they feel unfairly treated. Remember, the school is a learning environment that should support and nurture students, not turn them into casualties of poorly applied discipline.
