Surviving the Rising Cost of Dining Out: A Cautionary Tale
In the past couple of years, many have turned to dining out less due to price hikes, a trend amplified by the challenges posed by the pandemic. Nutria restaurants around the country have been battling to attract customers, offering specials and generous portions to keep the doors open. However, the climb in prices has forced some individuals to explore unconventional methods to manage their finances while still savoring meals outside the home.
Uncle Joe, who spends most of his time in a rural area near popular vacation beaches, has experienced firsthand the struggles of keeping a budget in line with the inflated costs of dining. Despite living in an area with lively tourist spots that can be quite expensive, he has found solace in locally owned family-run restaurants, which often provide better value for money. 'The family-owned spots are a bargain for the most part,' he remarks, adding, 'It's the touristy places that dodge the bullet.'
That being said, Uncle Joe is no stranger to the world of frugality and necessity. He has even started to adapt to his environment in unconventional ways. Understanding that restaurants often cater to customers with standard dining options, he opts to cook at home when possible, saving him time and money. 'I can cook exactly what I want cheaper and most food is hard to find in restaurants unless you want standard restaurant food like steak or burgers,' explains Uncle Joe.
Transforming the Grocery Store Experience
When grocery store prices began to soar, Uncle Joe decided to take matters into his own hands. Inspired by the idea of dining out, he began to 'steal' from grocery stores. 'Ive started to steal from grocery stores instead!' exclaimed Uncle Joe. He would purchase items that were dictated by what he believed should be the price, such as a dozen eggs which should never cost more than $2.00, and then 'steal' the extras to balance the cost.
Uncle Joe has altered his approach every once in a while, carefully timing his 'thefts' to align with the prices his local grocery stores offer. 'For example, if eggs are $4.00, I buy the eggs and steal what I believe should cost $2.00. So I spend $4.00 on eggs but come away with eggs and whatever I stole to counter the price back to what it should be,' he says. His generosity towards the stores is quite notable, as he believes eggs should never cost more than $1.20.
Cracking Down on Gas Stations
Uncle Joe's endeavors didn't stop at grocery stores. Gas stations became his next target, with a pragmatic approach to balancing his costs. Every 6 to 8 weeks, he would 'rob' a gas station, ensuring that the cost of gas for his car was where it ought to be. 'Once every 6 to 8 weeks, I hold up a gas station,' he explains matter-of-factly. He believes this practice balances the cost of gas to where it ought to be for him. He adds, 'They tried fucking with the wrong guy and now they find out what happens when they do.'
Maximizing Benefits from Unconventional Means
To ensure that he receives maximum benefits from his actions, Uncle Joe accounts for the extra time he spends on these activities. He makes sure that his time is well compensated, stating, 'I also count the extra time it takes me to accomplish all these things and make sure my time is well compensated for as well.'
He admits that he does this for more than just financial gain. He sees it as a matter of justice, a way to curb the unfair practices of businesses that try to take advantage of consumers. 'They tried fucking with the wrong guy,' he emphasizes. His defiance is marked by a deep sense of humor, showcased in his words, 'I'm almost 74 now so what are they going to do to me if they catch me? Put me in jail where my food then becomes absolutely free along with my health care, the roof over my head, and clothing. Boo hoo. I'm pretty sure other inmates won't rape an old man in the shower either so it's win-win for this old guy.'
While Uncle Joe's methods might sound unconventional, they highlight a broader issue: the increasing cost of dining out and the lengths that some go to manage their finances. As the world continues to grapple with economic challenges, the story of Uncle Joe is a reminder that frugality and ingenuity can indeed help navigate through tough times.
