Surprising Encounters with Former Students: Good and Bad
As a high school principal, I have had the privilege of working with countless students. Some left behind lasting impressions, both positive and negative. These encounters often leave a mark on me, reminding me of the significant role educators play in the lives of their students.
Experiences with Former Students
One of the darker experiences that comes to mind is the:///p> Drive Through Shootings: During my 10 years as a principal, I had to bury 10 students who were victims of drive-by shootings. This is a somber reminder of the challenges our students face. Academic Turnaround: On a brighter note, one of my once 'wannabe' students turned things around and enlisted in the Navy's special forces branch. This moment was incredibly rewarding for both the student and myself.
There were also positive encounters with former students who surpassed my expectations. For instance, my grandmother had a student in hjemkundskab, which translates to home economics, who refused to participate in the class activities. This student, however, ended up making a name for herself in the food market years later, turning her earlier attitude on its head.
The Impact of These Encounters
These encounters not only affect my life but also reinforce my dedication to teaching and nurturing my students. I am always pleased when a former student demonstrates they have taken what I taught them and used it for good.
One such student was Valencia. She was always cheerful and enthusiastic, making my typing classes enjoyable. We maintained a friendly rapport, and it was delightful to see her several times in the span of a few years, both at a thrift store and during my visit to Taco Bell.
Lessons from These Encounters
Positive encounters like these serve as reminders of the importance of positive reinforcement and support in education. They also highlight the myriad paths students can take after graduation.
A notable example is Beyoncé Knowles, now Mrs. Carter, who was a 12th-grader in one of my classes. She chose to skip college to pursue her career in music, much to my surprise and admiration. Her decision to follow her passion exemplifies the kind of confidence and determination that I hope all my students display.
These experiences not only affect me personally but also inspire me to continue motivating and guiding my students. Whether positive or negative, these encounters stay with me, serving as a testament to the impact we have on our students' lives.
