Surprises of Life: How Age 50 Changed the Landscape of My Existence
Introduction
We often hear about surprises at age 50 and older that many of us encounter. Sometimes these surprises are pleasant, and sometimes they serve as a reminder of our resilience and adaptability. In this article, we will explore the life journey of a person who has reached their mid-fifties and the pleasant surprises they have witnessed over the years. From unexpected physical strength to the joy of continuing to write in English, these experiences shed light on the transformative power of aging gracefully.
Turning 50 in 1997: A New Chapter
A2A: Thanks Evan for asking about the biggest surprise I've had since turning 50.
I turned 50 on March 21, 1997, working as a Director of Training in Lahore. Life took an unexpected turn when my seniors informed me that a case for me had been initiated to work as a Pre-shipment Inspector in Istanbul, Turkey. This role involved testing aerial cables, which was not my field of expertise, but they believed my skills would be valuable. Despite the challenge, I seized the opportunity, and the experience proved to be fruitful as my case was approved, and I returned from the mission honored for my successful testing and the subsequent loading process.
Three years later, in September 2017, I reflected on my journey and pondered the significant changes that age had brought. This article delves into two key surprises I've experienced since turning 50: maintaining physical strength and the continued recognition of my English writing abilities.
Maintaining Physical Strength
The notion of retaining physical strength as one ages is often a pleasant surprise. I recall a time, right after I got married, when I felt the demands of lifting a large pot of vegetables for guests were too much for me. I had to use both hands to do it, feeling a bit uncomfortable. Yet, more than two decades later, I found myself lifting the same pot in one hand with ease. This was a revelation, and it underscores the physical changes and improvements that can occur with age. My experience volunteering at the Calgary Food Bank is a testament to my increasing strength. Even though my neck felt slightly uncomfortable after a few hours of work, I was energized and remained without any signs of fatigue. This unexpected physical strength has been a major revelation in my life.
Continuing to Write in English
Another pleasant surprise has been the continued recognition of my English writing abilities. Since graduating from the University of Calgary in 2011, I had virtually stopped using English, save for interactions with medical professionals. I had assumed that I had forgotten English entirely, but the feedback from my readers showed otherwise. I shared my experiences and thoughts, and people recognized the value in my writing. This has encouraged me to continue honing my skills and engage more with the language I once mastered.
These two major surprises have been the highlights of my life since turning 50. I am grateful for the positive changes and the ongoing journey of growth and resilience. As I age, I continue to find joy in unexpected ways, whether through physical strength or the continued recognition of my written work.
Conclusion: A Life Full of Hope and Happiness
Reflecting on my life after 50, it is clear that my journey has become increasingly positive. I no longer feel depressed or worried; instead, I am filled with hope and happiness. This newfound outlook is the result of embracing the surprises that have graced my life.
