Studying Abroad: Transformative Adventures and Life-Changing Lessons

Studying abroad is one of the most exciting and educational adventures you can undertake. It not only broadens your academic horizons but also enriches your personal growth exponentially. Sharing my own experiences, I will provide insights and advice to those considering taking this leap.

My Experience in Studying Abroad

Back in 2009, I embarked on a journey to pursue my Bachelor’s degree in International Business at Barcelona, Spain. Little did I know, this decision would lead to a transformative experience that would shape my life’s journey. The combination of historical architecture and vibrant modern life in Barcelona was truly breathtaking. My courses were diverse, with students hailing from various parts of the globe, enriching every discussion with different perspectives.

One of the most memorable projects I undertook was creating a business plan for a start-up, integrating elements from our respective cultures. It was a challenging yet rewarding experience. The invaluable teamwork and cross-cultural communication skills I acquired are among the most cherished aspects of my time abroad. Living in Barcelona was more than just academics; I immersed myself in the local culture, learning to cook paella, celebrating festivals, and even attempting flamenco dancing, despite my limited ability.

One spontaneous weekend trip to the Pyrenees mountains stands out. We rented a small cabin and spent days hiking and nights stargazing, sharing our dreams and aspirations for the future. It was during these moments that I realized the profound personal growth I was undergoing, not only as a student but as a person. If you are considering studying abroad, I highly recommend it. This experience will open your eyes to new horizons, and the stories and friendships you build will last a lifetime.

My Academic Background

I pursued my Bachelor’s degree in Germany from 2009 to 2012 and later completed my Master’s degree from 2012 to 2014. Afterward, I obtained permanent residency and a German passport, eventually joining Microsoft. This period was a significant part of my professional and personal life, providing vast opportunities and experiences.

My First Living-Abroad Experience

In the summer between my sophomore and junior years of college, I participated in a six-week study abroad program in Guadalajara, Mexico. After a week of touristic activities in Mexico City, including visits to Tenochtitlan and Guanajuato, my roommate and I lived with a host family and attended el Instituto Cultural Mexicano-Norteamericano. We took classes in both Spanish language and culture, living independently and navigating the city. To this day, I haven’t returned to Mexico, but I have a deep yearning to do so, possibly in retirement.

Post-College Language Immersion Programs

After my Mexico experience, I participated in a three-week language immersion program in Lausanne, Switzerland followed by a full year at the Centre Universitaire de Luxembourg. During the Lausanne program, I lived with a host mom and attended intensive classes in various subjects. The bus excursion called "Trois Cols" left a vivid memory, taking us over the Swiss Alps to explore different cities and mountainous terrains.

In Luxembourg, I took the bus to classes every day at the Centre Universitaire, with professors from Luxembourg, France, and Belgium, all teaching in French. Living with two other students from my university, we traveled extensively throughout Europe during weekends and school breaks, visiting countries such as Belgium, the Netherlands, England, Italy, Germany, Monaco, and France. Money was tight, but with our student discounts, we managed to make the most of every opportunity.

Passing It On

Both of my daughters have also had the chance to study abroad, and I firmly believe that experiencing and immersing oneself in different cultures is invaluable. Encouraging students to live and experience other cultures, especially by learning languages, is crucial for their growth and development.

Studying abroad is not just about academic achievements; it's a life-changing decision that opens your eyes to the world and provides unparalleled personal and professional benefits. So, if you're considering it, take that leap of faith and embrace the transformative journey ahead.
