These are the safest encounters, where both the observer and the alligator feel safe. You can watch the alligator all day if it chooses to do so. However, it is essential not to try to stare down an alligator, as they can maintain eye contact for extended periods.

Category 2: Attempts to Get Closer

In this category, you see each other from a distance and attempt to get closer. The alligator will usually retreat 99 times out of 100, either by diving into the water or swimming away.

Category 3: Approaching Alligators

This is the most dangerous category, indicating that the alligator has lost its fear of humans. This usually happens when people feed the alligators, leading to an increased sense of curiosity. Even with larger alligators, small pets approaching the water's edge can prompt an alligator to see them as a meal.

Category 4: Active Hunting

This is the rarest and most dangerous category, where a very large alligator is actively hunting. Larger alligators generally prefer habitats far from human activity. Individuals with experience, such as myself, know how to handle such situations, but a novice would be in serious danger.
