Reflections on Life Transitions: A Journey of Self-Discovery and Renewal
In the past five years, several significant turning points have reshaped my life. These moments of change have been both challenging and enlightening, leading me on a journey of self-discovery and personal growth.
Uprooting Me, Yet Unwavering Faith
One of the pivotal moments in my life was re-reading Eckhart Tolle's works. This journey of spiritual reflection deepened my understanding of dis-identifying and detaching from what Tolle refers to as the Belief System's "BS." This has been a transformative process, enabling me to break free from the shackles of preconceived notions and societal norms.
From Medicine to Retirement
My life took an unexpected turn when the implementation of electronic medical records in healthcare became a reality. While it brought in a trove of data, the sheer volume of irrelevant and redundant information was overwhelming. My days were filled with paperwork, authorizations, and bureaucratic tasks, leading to burnout.
Ultimately, I made the difficult decision to retire in January 2017. This transition marked a new chapter. Although I missed my patients, I no longer dread the paperwork, authorizations, and other bureaucratic tasks. For the first time in years, I have the time to focus on activities that truly nourish me, such as reading, writing, and engaging in social work.
Embracing New Roles and Responsibilities
Life after retirement presented both challenges and opportunities. I had to redefine my purpose and find a meaningful way to engage in my community. Engaging in reading, writing, and social work not only helped me stay relevant but also provided a sense of purpose that was previously defined by my professional role.
Other significant life transitions include my relationship with my beloved Linda. We have also expanded our family by welcoming more animal companions into our home, fostering a new sense of responsibility and companionship. Additionally, downsizing from a large, two-story home to a smaller, more manageable house has been a cleansing process, helping me to let go of clutter and embrace simplicity.
Through these transitions, I have become more self-reliant, independent, and aware of who I am. My journey of self-discovery has allowed me to find my own path through life, become a better writer, and stand up for myself with greater confidence. I now strive to be a more authentic version of myself, free from the expectations of society.
