Reflections on Life Transformations: Embracing Change in 2021
Transformation in our lives often comes as a surprise, evolving from personal choices and circumstances beyond our control. In 2021, I made a significant change that reshaped my life and forced me to reflect on my personal values and family ties. This journey is a deeply personal narrative, and while it may not apply to everyone, it offers valuable insights into the human condition.
Regaining Independence
After residing in a retirement home near Devanahalli for 5 years and 8 months, I returned to my old apartment in South Bengaluru. This move was driven by purely personal and family-related reasons, which I have shared only with a select few intimate contacts. Discussing these reasons publicly would not be appropriate, as they are deeply private and sensitive. My views on the pros and cons of living in a retirement home remain unchanged, but my decision to return home applies uniquely to me and my wife.
My Mother and I
My journey of transformation was deeply influenced by my interactions and relationships, particularly with my elderly mother. I kept her alive for ten years, saving her life not just once, but five times. On several occasions, I had to roll her over to help her breathe due to her sleep apnea. Despite my efforts, my mother eventually passed away at the age of 96. This significant event marked the end of a long period of sacrifice and care for me.
While I have always respected her wishes and lived a life that prioritized her needs, the years of suppressing my own desires have brought about a profound change. After ten years of putting my mom's needs first, I now feel a newfound freedom, akin to a stray dog, with no specific goals or desires.
Adjusting to Change
Travelling to the USA in 2023 with my family, we made the difficult decision to move home. This was a family decision, taken after thorough consultations and discussions with all parties involved. The process of adjusting to a new routine and the absence of my mother has been challenging, but it has also been a rewarding experience.
The experience made me realize that my mother's passing was the 'last milestone' of my life. Life milestones such as birth, driver's license, getting your own car, graduation, marriage, having children, and owning a house have all been significant stages, but they culminate in the tragic but inevitable end of life. The last milepost of our lives is often marked by the death of our parents, highlighting the cyclical and finite nature of life.
Lessons Learned
The decision to move home and the subsequent change in my life have provided me with a new perspective on what really matters in life. While I do not have specific goals or desires, the freedom and peace I currently enjoy have undoubtedly transformed my life. The experience has taught me the importance of balance, self-care, and the significance of family and loved ones.
For those who may be considering significant changes in their lives, reflecting on personal experiences and engaging in thoughtful discussions with family and friends can pave the way for positive transformations. Embracing change, whether it be moving homes or making other life-altering decisions, can lead to personal growth and a deeper understanding of oneself and one's values.
