Purchasing and Pickup of Pawned Items: What You Need to Know

Whether you can pay for and pick up an item from a pawn shop using a pawn ticket without the original pawned items owner being present typically depends on the pawn shop's policies and the laws in your jurisdiction. Here are some general points to consider:

Pawn Ticket

The pawn ticket is usually required to claim the item as it serves as proof of the transaction. When you present the ticket, the pawn shop will verify its authenticity and check if the named individual has signed it.

Shop Policy

Some pawn shops may allow you to pick up the item if you have the ticket, while others may require the original owner to be present to verify their identity and authorize the release. This can also vary based on the specific shop's internal policies. It is crucial to check with the individual pawn shop beforehand to ensure a smooth process.

Identification and Written Permission

You may need to provide identification and written permission from the original owner if the pawn shop requires it. Some shops may have more stringent requirements than others, especially if the item in question is valuable or a firearm.

Local Laws and Regulations

Regulations regarding pawn shops can vary by state or region. It's important to check local laws that may govern such transactions. For example, some areas require ID both when pawning and when picking up items. In some jurisdictions, this is mandated by law, while in others, it is a shop policy.

Personal Experience: Working in Pawn Shops

I worked in pawn shops for about three years in South Carolina at the turn of the century. This is how it worked back then:

If the back of the ticket was signed and the name matched what was on the front, the bearer of the ticket could redeem the item for the outstanding balance. The person behind the counter doesn't have the tools or skills to know if the ticket was actually signed by the person named on the front. That's why we always advised people not to sign the tickets until they were ready to pick up their item. If someone lost the ticket and it was already signed, there was nothing we could do to help them.

Local Shop Practices

In most cases, pawn shops in Washington State are bearer tickets. Whoever has the ticket can claim it. There are only two exceptions:

A firearm must be redeemed by the person who pawned it, pending the outcome of the background checks. If the person who pawned the item has already picked it up by proving they were the pawner, they can get the item with ID. If someone else comes in with the ticket after that, the ticket is void, and the item likely wouldn't be there anyway.

To ensure a smooth process, it's best to contact the specific pawn shop directly to understand their requirements and policies. This will help you avoid any pitfalls and ensure that you can successfully redeem the item.
