Proper Maintenance of an Outdoor Sauna

Proper Maintenance of an Outdoor Sauna

Regular maintenance of an outdoor sauna is crucial to ensure its longevity, hygiene, and safety. Here are some detailed steps to keep your outdoor sauna in top condition without professional help, along with tips for when you decide to hand it over to a professional.

Cleaning Method for the Spa

While I am not an expert, these steps have worked well for me in cleaning the water lines in my caravan park:

Drain the Spa: Allow all but the last inch of water to remain just above the return draw pipe. Wash Down Walls: Thoroughly wash all walls with pure pool chlorine and scrub. Run the Spa: Operate the spa so that all the chlorine flows through the jets for about 30 minutes. Drain Again: Completely drain the spa. Refill and Run: Refill to the working level and run the spa for another 30 minutes, then drain again. Bacteria-free Pipes: All pipes should now be bacteria-free.

Professional Maintenance

For those who prefer not to handle maintenance themselves, it is recommended to let a professional outdoor sauna maintainer take care of it. They have the expertise and tools necessary to ensure optimal performance and hygiene.

Preventing Staining and Varnishing

It is important to avoid painting, staining, or varnishing the inside of the sauna with any unapproved materials. These substances can negatively impact the hygiene of the sauna and may even cause harm. Instead, use sauna-safe products.

After use, make sure to clean up immediately. This includes drying the walls and benches, and wiping any dirt from the floor. Leave the door open after use to allow for drying and ventilation.

Using Sauna Cleaners

The following cleaning techniques are commonly used:

Cloth Brushes: Use cloth brushes to clean the sauna. Sauna-specific cleaners are available at Walmart and can be effective in killing bacteria and leaving a pleasant scent. Stove Part Cleaning: The stove part requires a lye mix with vinegar. You can use common cleaners like Lysol on the entire area after cleaning the lye mix thoroughly. Most cleaning supplies for saunas can be found at Walmart or specialized spa stores.

Keep in mind that regular temperature maintenance is vital. Allow the sauna to cool down before raising the temperature. Proper cleaning methods include leaving the water in the bucket and on the stones until they are clean, ensuring no residue remains from the last use.

By following these guidelines, you can ensure that your outdoor sauna remains a pleasant and hygienic space for relaxation and enjoyment. Whether you choose to handle maintenance yourself or hire a professional, proper care is essential for the best experience.
