Never Give Up: A Path to Overcoming Persistent Challenges
I understand your struggle—it's hard to believe that in 20 years nothing has changed despite your efforts. It's important to delve into what exactly you have tried to improve in yourself, your situation, and society. Self-improvement requires a lot of effort, and it's a continuous journey. Think of it this way: if I've spent more than 20 years on this and I still feel there's a long way to go, it means I keep striving and adapting.
Sometimes, it's hard to let go of certain habits, traits, or characteristics. However, it's also important to recognize that striving for perfection is not the goal. There's always room for improvement. With that said, improving your situation is much easier. If you are gainfully employed and spend less than you earn, economic stability should be achievable. It's also a matter of mind; facing societal issues seems impossible alone, but every positive action counts. Start with your own little deeds, and they will naturally come.
Self-improvement is not a given; it's a conscious decision. Here are some strategies to kick-start your journey:
Strategy #1: Embrace Responsibility Instead of Victimhood
Listen to the words you use and consider them carefully. Phrases like “spent,” “trying,” “nothing,” “still,” and “same” indicate a cycle of complacency and a lack of action. You either do something or you don't—there is no "try."
Instead of complaining about what hasn't changed, start by making a conscious effort to understand what you have invested and what you can do differently. Evaluate your past plans and see what you have learned. Were you consistent and persistent in your efforts? Did you put forth your best effort most days, or did you succumb to feelings of hopelessness and despair? Living based on solid values can help move your life forward. You have the choice to give up, but that could mean choosing to be a "victim" or to reset and move forward. Here’s how:
Strategy #2: Define Your Desires and Align with Your Values
First, know what you desire. This involves taking a look at your values in life. Many people set goals based on what others think they should do, which can lead to a lack of motivation. Make sure your goals are aligned with your own values. Utilize self-assessment tools online to help determine your values.
Strategy #3: Set Clear and Achievable Goals
Second, map out the areas in your life physical, mental, emotional, relationships, and financial. Have at least three goals for each area. Write these goals down and keep them in front of you, reviewing them daily. Write them in your own handwriting, as this activates a part of your brain to find ways to achieve them. Use the SMART formula (specific, measurable, actionable, attainable, relevant, and time-measured). Word them in "I will" rather than "I want to" or "I'd like to." This is a powerful way to create a beacon for yourself.
Strategy #4: Take Daily Action
Third, take daily action towards your goals—no matter how small. Keep the goal in front of you to provide motivation and remember that each small step is one step closer to your goal. The process of action will also help you assess and adjust your path.
Find checkpoints for progress and small rewards along the way, and save a bigger reward for the end. This will keep you motivated and make the journey much more enjoyable.
Strategy #5: Become a Lifelong Learner
Fourth, develop your own self-learning program. For example, I read at least one book each month and write down the principles in the books, applying them to my life. Reading and learning are essential for growth and self-improvement.
Strategy #6: Choose Positive Influences
Fifth, choose people around you who are supportive and positive. Surrounding yourself with positivity can significantly impact your mindset and help you maintain a positive outlook on life. Choose to see your life in a positive way, and find things to be grateful for, even in the midst of challenges.
Strategy #7: Practice Gratitude
Sixth, every day, make a list of things you are grateful for. Even the poorest person can find things, people, or events to be grateful for, such as their own ability to be alive. This daily practice can shift your mindset and bring a sense of joy and contentment.
Strategy #8: Fulfill Your Responsibilities
Lastly, fulfill your responsibilities. Remember the saying, "to whom much is given, much is expected," and "be faithful in the small things and more will be given." Taking responsibility and showing dedication can lead to further opportunities and growth.
By following these steps, you will find yourself moving forward every day and every year. Remember, change is possible, and it starts with small, consistent actions. Your journey to self-improvement is worth it.
