Navigating Surname Issues in Schengen Visa Applications with Single Names

When applying for a Schengen visa, dealing with a single name can pose unique challenges. This article discusses how to successfully navigate the Schengen visa application process if you do not have a surname in your passport.

Understanding the Schengen Visa Requirements

When filling out the Schengen visa application form, it is crucial to indicate your actual First Name Unknown (FNU) in the 'First Name' field and your single name in the 'Surname' field. Ensure that the names used in your application match those on other relevant documents, such as your passport and other proof of identity.

Personal Experience with Single Names

I have encountered the same issue. My travels in the Southeast Asia (SEA) region using my single name “Jigyasu” have been seamless, with no issues regarding visas, flights, hotels, or immigration. Even the Philippine Embassy once confirmed with me that I indeed had a single name rather than a typo, which is a rare occurrence. However, things changed when I moved to the Middle East region, particularly the UAE, where a rule requires travelers to have a surname for entry.

Addressing the New Challenge

Since most of my future travels will be in the Middle East region, I decided to take proactive measures to ensure I meet this new requirement. Here’s what I am doing:

1. Changing My Name on Official Records

With my official documents from birth showing only a single name, it is not easy to change my name on my passport. Therefore, I have initiated a process to change my name on the following documents:

Aadhar Card: I have obtained a Domicile certificate from my hometown block, listing my full name as “Jigyasu Kumar”. I submitted an application to the Aadhar Seva Kendra (UIDAI) for a name change, which is currently in process. PAN Card: Once my Aadhar name is changed, I will update my PAN Card by applying online. Banks: I need to inform my banks about the change through an offline application, submitting new Aadhar and PAN card scan copies. Passport: I have to submit two local newspaper ads along with two public documents (Aadhar, PAN) and my old passport to obtain a new passport issuance.

All these changes are necessary and will take about two months, which is a time-consuming process.

Conclusion

Successfully navigating the Schengen visa application process with a single name requires meticulous attention to detail and adherence to strict formatting requirements. Although the process is complex, it is possible with the right steps and patience. This experience can serve as a guide for others facing similar challenges.
