My Library: A Lifelong Passion for Books
Having a love for books is not something that can be easily quelled. While my personal book-buying habits have evolved over the years, my passion for reading remains as strong as ever. To understand my relationship with books and the places where I source them, let's dive into some of my thoughts and experiences.
Public Library as a Resource
For those of you who might assume that since I don’t purchase many books, I must be finicky, let me explain. I have no qualms about diving into a good read from the public library. In fact, it's both convenient and cost-effective. Public libraries are an invaluable resource. Before I embarked on the journey of buying any book, I would visit my local library to explore the vast array of books available. If a book catches my eye, reading it can be a delightful adventure without putting any strain on my budget.
That said, there are times when a book I’ve found particularly enchanting will become a deserving addition to my personal library. For instance, 'Lessons in Chemistry' is one such book that I cherished so much, I wanted to revisit it multiple times. Another book, 'Timeline' by Michael Crichton, was also a compelling read, and I chose to purchase it after reading it twice. In both cases, the book became a tangible piece of the experience, which to me, feels like a celebration of literature.
A Book Lovers Collection
Those who know me well can attest to my physical relationship with books. I have several bookcases stuffed to the brim, and they’re not just on my shelves; they’re scattered throughout my home. From my attic to the every nook and cranny, my home is a veritable library. Not a day goes by that I don't acquire a new book. I just received several new orders today, and I can't seem to stop. My love for books is as unwavering as ever. However, when I downsized to a flat, I realized that even though I love books, I don't have the room for them all. I had to sell a couple of boxes to local charity shops, as my new accommodations simply couldn't accommodate my growing collection.
Book Withdrawal and Amodalities
While downsizing was a necessary step, the act of parting with books was not without its consequences. In fact, I often hear laughter and teasing from my family and friends whenever they see my vast collection. They occasionally mock me, but I feel like I'm behaving normally - one can hardly live without books. A book withdrawal can be a serious condition, and while I love to gather books, I still have a substantial number that I haven't touched yet. This, to me, is a testament to the vast world of literature that is still waiting to be explored.
Whether I borrow from a library or buy one, reading is a fundamental part of my everyday life. It keeps me grounded, provides me with new perspectives, and recharges my soul. So, while I might not buy books as frequently as I used to, my love for books and the comfort they bring remains unchanged. If you're a fellow book lover, I hope this little journey into my collection will inspire you to build your own library or appreciate your personal library more.
