The Allure of a New Home:
Imagine starting fresh in a foreign land. For me, such an experience has already come to pass. After careful consideration, I chose a country that offers not just freedom and safety but also a way of life I could thrive in: Singapore. Known for its wealth, efficient governance, and deep-rooted safety, Singapore has become a haven for young families like my own.
The Chosen Destination: Singapore
Singapore captivated me with its unseasonal climate, a city that boasts an enduring absence of winter while serving as a gateway to a myriad of intriguing travel destinations. It is a place where family life thrives, with the added advantage of a fully English-speaking environment, which was a critical factor in my decision. Furthermore, the tax structure in Singapore is astonishingly lenient, offering significant monetary benefits to its residents. It was under the visionary leadership of two Cambridge-educated individuals, Mr. and Mrs. Lee Kuan Yew, that Singapore was transformed into a society renowned for its fairness and prosperity.
Mrs. Lee Kwan Yew, or Kwa Geok Choo, was a remarkable woman, a law graduate from the same university as her husband. She actively contributed to the drafting of the Constitution of the People's Action Party, advocating for the principles of equal pay for women and the practice of monogamous marriage.
French Attractions: Normandie and Beyond
Rotating the spotlight to another cherished destination, southern France, presents a tapestry of beauty and tranquility. In this region, I found solace in the ability to explore nearby mountains, coastal regions, or the cultural rich city of Paris, all within a short journey. Regionally, my connection to Normandy, particularly the historic city of Rouen, remains deeply personal. However, visiting the United Kingdom, once a familiar land, is no longer on my radar, having last set foot there in 2016. Despite the theoretical possibility, the absence of a home there speaks volumes about my evolving preferences.
The Bittersweet Choice: Portugal
Portugal, a place rich in culture, history, and natural beauty, beckons with its affordability, inviting beaches, and illustrious cuisine. Living there was destined to be a consideration, especially after planning to retire in Oporto. Yet, it came to a sudden halt with the untimely passing of my beloved wife in 2019. Her presence was an integral part of our dreams for a life there, and to recall our countless visits without her is a poignant remembrance. Without her, Portugal holds a melancholic allure.
Yet, Portugal remains a tempting sanctuary for those seeking a lush environment to settle down, despite the challenges faced while navigating the country following her loss. The ease of speaking Portuguese and the appealing food make it a choice that, perhaps in another universe, would have been mine.
Expanding Possibilities: Switzerland and Italy
Reflecting on other European destinations, Switzerland and Italy stand out as compelling alternatives. Both countries offer a welcoming atmosphere, with Switzerland's reserved yet warm residents making it approachable and inviting. Italy, with its rich cultural heritage, could be an ideal destination for a more reserved individual as it provides a comfortable and familiar environment. However, Italy's bustling lifestyle may present a challenge for someone like myself, who desires quieter and close-knit social circles.
The Unsuitable Choice: Sweden
Sweden, a place where I spent a formative period during my youth and where I am fluent in the language, presents a contrasting narrative. While it was an option, my age now, in my mid-sixties, makes it less practical. The rigorous, youthful lifestyle that Sweden offers may not align with my current needs. However, the country's natural beauty and harmonious culture, especially for someone with a preference for reserved and tranquil settings, make it a consideration for a younger generation.
The National Home: The USA
Lastly, the United States, a place indelibly marked by a half-century of my life, has a bittersweet future. Regularly traveling to the San Francisco Bay Area will still be a part of my routine, but the prospect of living there again is dim. My attachment to the U.S., while deep, has shifted to embrace the idea of new beginnings and cherished memories rather than returning to the same place.
In conclusion, the journey of choosing a home across borders is a blend of personal history, current circumstances, and future aspirations. Whether it is the structured safety of Singapore, the cultural richness of Portugal, or the tranquil lifestyle of Switzerland, each choice is a testament to the ever-evolving nature of our lives as we explore the world beyond our horizons.
