Morning Routines and Rituals: Perfecting the Wake-Up Call
Waking up in the morning might seem like a daunting task, but it’s the start of a new day filled with possibilities and opportunities. Each of us has our own unique way of starting the morning, and for some, it involves a set of time-honored rituals that help us transition smoothly from sleep to wakefulness. Here’s a detailed look at one person's approach to their mornings, from the moment they wake up with their morning jitter to their late breakfasts and evening tea routines.
Enjoying the Morning Quiet
Upon waking, the first thing I do is lie in bed and soak in the surroundings. I often spend a few moments listening to the serene sounds of morning birds and the gentle hum of life all around. This simple act fills me with joy and a sense of being alive, knowing that the sun is up and so am I. The feeling of coffee brewing or the warm water from a shower is a delightful way to start the day. If I don’t have any plans, I might even indulge in a late breakfast or a light snack, like a dunch, to ensure I’m energized for the day ahead. I’m a proponent of eating early in the day to avoid heavy meals later, as it helps maintain a better metabolic rhythm.
Morning Medication and Relaxation
The first thing on my morning routine is popping my thyroid medication with a sip of water. It’s crucial to follow the instructions regarding an empty stomach and a one-hour wait post-medication, which I try to adhere to. Sometimes, I might doze off for a short while after taking my medication. Upon waking, I usually drink a glass or two of water to stay hydrated and refresh my body. This is an essential part of my routine to ensure that my body is ready for the day ahead.
Leg Cramp Relief and Stretching
Leg cramps can be a night-time annoyance, causing me to jump out of bed multiple times. To alleviate these cramps, I make a habit of stretching my legs gently before going to sleep. Keeping an under-sheet warming pad on my lower legs also helps in maintaining warmth, especially during cold nights. In the morning, I stretch my legs and back for about 5 minutes to get those muscles moving. Sometimes, running hot water over my legs in the evening or even during the middle of the night can help in releasing a cramp instantly. These simple measures keep my nights more peaceful and my legs feeling better in the mornings.
Preparing for the Day
After attending to these morning rituals, it’s time to care for the cats, run the espresso machine to make my daily coffee, feed the dog, and catch up on the news while sipping on my freshly brewed coffee. Often, this routine is followed by a 40-minute walk with the dog, which is a great way to start the day and get some fresh air and exercise.
Reflecting on the Coffee Journey
One day, I thought it would be a fun challenge to recreate the café-quality espresso I used to enjoy. I decided to take a chance on a Walmart espresso machine brand called Ultima Cosa, and it’s been a game-changer for my mornings. The high-quality coffee that I can now make at home has dramatically improved my start to the day. Every morning now is a delightful experience of savoring a perfect cup of coffee, whether it’s a weekday or a weekend.
Enhancing Sleep Hygiene
As the day winds down, I love to unwind with a cup of tea before bed. Listening to soothing sleep sounds on YouTube helps me relax and drift off to sleep more easily. While I might feel the need to drink the entire cup of tea, I make sure not to finish it, as I prefer to fall asleep peacefully. Techniques such as slow, deep breathing or box breathing also help me relax further, ensuring a good night's sleep with no insomnia.
Through these morning routines and rituals, I not only start my day with a sense of renewal but also ensure that I maintain good health and a positive mindset. Each morning is a new beginning, and these habits help me embrace that with joy and gratitude.
