Memories of Modern Technology: From Old Games to Travel Adventures

Technology has transformed the way we experience life, both in the games we play and the adventures we embark upon. Since I first got on the internet nearly 25 years ago, technology has consistently introduced new levels of excitement and convenience into my life. From my most memorable moments with modern technology to my recent travel experiences, here are some of the highlights that made it all worth it.

Golden Moments with Modern Technology

Perhaps one of the most exciting moments in my life came during the early days of online play for the famed Grand Theft Auto franchise. A group of friends and I gathered excitedly to finally play with each other and explore the open world. Before we knew it, someone suggested we all get into a plane together. Our initial laughter turned into chaos as I decided to exit the plane mid-flight at cruising altitude. The ensuing panic and hilarity still brings a smile to my face over a dozen years later. This impulsive act was one of the best moments I've ever experienced while playing video games.

As I semi-retired and began to use the train more frequently, the Metro app was a pleasant discovery. This app made navigating public transportation smoother and more efficient, enhancing my travel experience significantly. The ability to track the arrival and departure times of trains provided peace of mind and helped me arrive at my destinations on time.

Another highlight was the thrill of feeling the acceleration of a Tesla car. As a teenager, experimenting with CB radios to connect with people from far away was equally exciting. Each of these moments has left an indelible mark on my memory and provided ample reasons to appreciate modern technology.

Internet and Libraries: A Love Story

My journey with the internet began in 1997 or 1998, and it changed everything. For the longest time, libraries were my libraries. They were where I would go to escape and immerse myself in a myriad of knowledge. When I first accessed the internet, it was a revelation. The sheer amount of information available was a breath of fresh air, akin to discovering a vast digital library, library, internet. Even as a young child, I was captivated by the Encyclopedia Britannica. I'd pick a letter and read through each book, skipping the less interesting parts, but I was always enthusiastic about learning and exploring.

A Traveller's Tale

My recent trip to Zagreb, Croatia, was a new adventure filled with delightful surprises. I arrived early in the morning after a long journey from Athens. After checking into the hotel and taking a moment to rest, I wandered around the city enjoying its calm and picturesque neighborhoods. I took a tram and was amused by the challenges of getting the ticket and stamping it, as the systems in Zagreb and Athens both differed from those in Cairo. Wandering through the streets, I noticed beautiful children's playgrounds and lush green spaces. Eventually, I found my way to Jarun Lake, a wide and beautiful expanse where I enjoyed the serenity and the activities such as sailing and fishing.

After a peaceful day of wandering, I decided to return to the hotel. However, I quickly got lost and spent an hour navigating the city without finding my way. Fortunately, Google Maps played a crucial role in guiding me back to the hotel. When I realized I needed assistance, I turned to Google instant translation to communicate with a local who spoke only Croatian. Her smile and assistance made the experience even more memorable. On my first day in Zagreb, I felt a sense of peace knowing I was in a place that seemed exclusive to the city's citizens.

Google, you saved me today! Thank you very much!
