Living the Minimalist Lifestyle: My Desert Odyssey
Minimalism isn't just a design trend—it's a lifestyle philosophy that many choose to embrace. This article explores my journey into a minimalist lifestyle, focusing on sustainability and simplicity while living off the grid in the desert.
Defining Minimalism
The minimalist lifestyle is often misunderstood as the absence of luxuries. It's more about living with intention, focusing on what truly matters, and reducing clutter and unnecessary possessions. Whether you're a nudist like me или simply looking to declutter, minimalism can fit into many different contexts and lifestyles.
My Desert Retreat
I opted for a minimalist lifestyle and now live in a remote desert area, far from the trappings of modern city life. There's no running water, no electricity, and no TV. Just a few essential items and a RV to call home. This drastic change has allowed me to live simply and sustainably.
What I Keep
I've adopted a tiny living setup, keeping only what I need. This includes:
A propane stove/oven: I choose not to use it for various reasons, including efficiency and environmental impact. An Aeropress and Coleman oven: These are my occasional luxuries, used for coffee and simple meals when I venture out to town. A baby wipe bath: This is a surprising necessity for desert life, as I'm a nudist. I enhance their effectiveness with rubbing alcohol and extra water. Water jugs: Painted black to absorb heat from the sun, these jugs provide me with hot water when needed. Medications and food: Essential for my health and sustenance.A Typical Day
My day starts with the sunrise, and my schedule is intentionally simple:
I check my phone for the news, email, and Quora. At around 8 AM, I take my medications, have a light meal, and feed my dog. A "milk bath" with baby wipes and rubbing alcohol keeps me clean and dry in the desert heat. I charge my cell phone and water jug with the sun's energy. I may feed my dog and prepare for the day ahead.Staying Busy and Productive
As I have no access to a regular job or office, I engage in volunteer work at an art center that also serves as an adult daycare for people with developmental delays. Once my laundry and lunch are attended to, I work at the center, helping others and staying active.
Staying Warm When It Cools
During the cooler nights, I stay warm by layering and using my propane stove/oven sparingly. The sunrise brings back warmth, and I aim to use as little energy as possible.
Selling Plasma for Income
Twice a week, I sell plasma to earn the money I need. This steady income allows me to live a simple life, without the need for a traditional job.
Eating Out of Home
On hot summer days, I spend time at Burger King for a drink and hangout. The free Wi-Fi and outlet for my laptop make it a great spot to catch up on work or leisure.
Hiking and Stargazing
When the day's work is done, I head for the desert to hike for two to five miles. I work on my tan and enjoy the golden hue of the sky, which changes to a vibrant orange at sunset. I also take this time to stargaze, admiring the countless stars and the moon.
Final Thoughts
Living a minimalist lifestyle has allowed me to achieve personal fulfillment and financial independence. By focusing on what I need and letting go of excess, I've found that my days are filled with meaningful activities and natural beauty. This lifestyle has enabled me to retire at 53, a feat that few can achieve.
