Living in Australia: A Safe, Diverse, and Peaceful Experience

Yesterday, the weather was quite warm, a pattern that will likely continue with the arrival of summer. In Australia, summers are typically hot and sunny, ideal for outdoor activities and enjoying the beautiful landscapes.

A few weeks ago, I underwent a Cochlear implant surgery, which involved a day-long procedure followed by an overnight stay at the Mater Private Hospital. This hospital is widely recognized as one of the best in the country, and the cost was entirely covered by the healthcare system, highlighting the commitment to ensuring access to medical care.

Safety and Security in Australia

For the past 75 years, Australia has been a secure place, with a few notable exceptions. One such incident involved a lockdown at one of our vocational colleges, triggered by a potential active shooter. The suspect was later identified as a thief who had parked a vehicle near the college before disappearing. This event, while concerning, is an isolated case and does not reflect the general safety profile of Australia.

Unlike in several other countries, my children and grandchildren go to school without the fear of being shot at by someone with a firearm. The prevalence of firearm safety regulations and background checks in Australia has significantly reduced the risk of such incidents.

Our country does not experience tornadoes in populated areas, which are a major concern in other regions. The occasional cyclones, while they do occur, tend to hit sparsely populated areas, minimizing structural damage and loss of life.

Multiculturalism and Inclusivity

I live in a multi-racial community, and I can attest that racial tensions are minimal. There have been incidents where racial nicknames were used, but such terminology is now considered inappropriate and offensive. The current cultural ethos promotes inclusivity and respect for all individuals irrespective of their background.

During a work-related visit to a farm, I observed the use of a licensed rifle, which highlights the responsible approach to firearms in Australia. The man I met had a license, which he obtained as he had a legitimate need for the weapon to protect his sheep from dingoes. This demonstrates the balance between safety and responsible ownership of firearms.

Weather and Climate

Until recently, I had never experienced snow. During a holiday in Tasmania, I drove on snow-covered roads for the first time, a sensation that was entirely new to me. For someone who has never encountered snow, it can be a daunting experience, and I have since realized that owning appropriate clothing for cold weather is essential.

The political system in Australia is often viewed more favorably compared to some other nations. Elections in Australia allow citizens to vote for their preferred candidates. If a politician is performing well and is up for re-election, their supporters can vote in their favor. Conversely, if a political figure is perceived as corrupt or unsuitable, citizens can cast their ballots for an alternative candidate who better aligns with their expectations.

I am deeply grateful to call Australia my home, a place where safety, diversity, and political stability coexist. My experience living here has been nothing short of enriching, and I am fortunate to be part of such a dynamic and welcoming society.
