South Korea, a country that I have called home for the past four years, has not only become my second home but also a place where every day feels like a new adventure. From the vibrant streets of Seoul to the serene landscapes outside, the country has consistently impressed me with its culture, people, and lifestyle. In this article, I will share my experiences, insights, and reflections on living in South Korea, particularly focusing on the lifestyle and daily life of foreigners in the country.
Initial Impressions and Daily Life
During my first visit to South Korea in 2017, for a mere 10-day vacation, I was struck by the sheer hospitality and politeness of the people. The cleanliness of the streets and tourist spots, as well as the diverse range of food, including Korean-Italian fusion cuisine and Halal traditional Korean food, made my stay memorable. As a tourist, the country offered an array of accommodations and tourist spots, all surpassing my expectations.
When I decided to stay in South Korea for the long term, I was initially hesitant about the cost of living, especially given my midsize income. However, over the years, I have come to appreciate the value for money and the many positives that outweigh the initial concerns.
Lovely Days in Seoul and Beyond
Seoul, the bustling capital, has always been a highlight of my stay in South Korea. Recently, my trip to Seoul felt like an extended vacation, with the city's temples and modern architecture providing a delightful contrast to everyday life. Even the sushi and sashimi in Paju, while not quite up to the standards of Japan, are still a wonderful gastronomic treat, and a visit to Itaewon for a chirashi bowl ensured that I didn't miss out on the authentic experience.
The accommodation and the surrounding amenities, such as hotels with their unique English signs and the high-quality service, continue to be a pleasant surprise. From time to time, I find myself reflecting on why I moved here in the first place, but the answer is always the same: the convenience and quality of life here are unparalleled.
Teaching English and Social Life
My daily life as a foreigner teaching English to kids has been nothing short of delightful. The kids are smart, kind, and incredibly cute, making each day a joy. At first glance, they might seem identical, but as you get to know them, their unique characteristics and personalities shine through.
As a singleton, I've also enjoyed the social scene in South Korea. The convenience and accessibility of urban life make it easy to meet new people and enjoy various activities. Over the years, I've been gifted Pokémon bread and other treats, a testament to the kindness of the Korean people.
Healthcare and Surgery Experience
One of the most significant aspects of life in South Korea is the excellent healthcare system. When my wife needed surgery, we opted for high-frequency treatment instead of conventional surgery. Our Samsung gap insurance, which cost us an extra 15 won a month, covered a 10k procedure, ensuring that she had a private room with private nurses. This seamless experience further solidified my love for the country.
Reflecting on the decision to move here, I feel grateful for the positive "WTF moments" that have made living in South Korea a dream come true. From the convenience of everyday life to the support during medical procedures, South Korea has consistently exceeded my expectations. I firmly believe that I will love and die in this country, and the future seems to be even more exciting.
