What are Some Life Lessons from Parents?
The journey of life is a tapestry woven with advice and guidance from our parents. One of these lessons is particularly poignant: the importance of honoring your grandparents. My grandparents were better to me than my own parents, but as a teenager, I was preoccupied with other things. Only much later did I realize the value of these relationships and how much they contribute to who we are today. This lesson has been instilled in my 4 children, knowing that the time to see their grandparents will inevitably pass.
Don’t Waste Your Time
Another crucial lesson from my parents is the importance of time and not to waste it. Whether it was the time spent with grandparents or family, they taught me to cherish every moment. Today, we often find ourselves busy—going from one social event to another. However, taking the time to sit down and have a meaningful conversation with our loved ones can make a profound impact. This lesson is crucial in recognizing the fleeting nature of life and the importance of quality time.
A Great Work Ethic
Both my parents instilled a great work ethic in me. They believed that respect must be earned, not merely expected. 'You don’t get respect; you have to earn it,' they would say. This message resonated with me as I grew older. It's a valuable lesson that has helped me in my professional life. I conduct my business with honesty and integrity, and it has led to my having more work than I can handle. Honesty and the integrity of a man's word must be unwavering principles to live by.
Never Let a Man Come Between Us
Sisterhood was also emphasized by my parents. They taught me to value my relationships with sisters and women. One lesson in particular stands out: never let a man come between sisters or violate a woman. Strong bonds of sisterhood are irreplaceable, and it remains a core value in my life. My parents made sure I carried this message forward whenever possible.
Respect for Women
Another lesson was the respect for women. They drilled into me from a young age that 'you must never hit a woman under any circumstances.' This message has stayed with me for 81 years, and it is a principle I firmly hold. Respect for women is not just an act of moral superiority but a basic ethos in any relationship.
Continuous Learning
My parents also emphasized the importance of lifelong learning. They encouraged me to seek knowledge and to embrace the continuous journey of learning. As I reflect on my life, I realize that learning has enriched my understanding of the world. Knowing more opens up more questions, and these questions should be answered through further learning. This belief has stayed with me throughout my life, urging me to always be curious and to keep seeking new knowledge.
Today, as I mourn the loss of my parents, I am grateful for the lessons they have imparted. I hope to pass on this wisdom to my family and others, ensuring these lessons continue to guide future generations. The value of these lessons cannot be overstated; they provide a roadmap for a fulfilling and principled life.
