Is Solitary Wicca a Valid Path in Modern Times?

Despite the common belief that solitary Wiccans are not true Wiccans, this simply could not be further from the truth. A number of the most talented and devoted witches I have encountered have been solitary practitioners. Coven members may not recognize you as Wiccan, but that does not negate your spiritual journey. Blessed be.

Challenging the Myths

Roll your eyes whenever someone insists that you must be a part of a coven to be a true Wiccan. Most of these are members of covens who were taught this idea from a young age. Their insistence that solitary practitioners are not 'real' Wiccans is unfounded. There is absolutely nothing wrong with being a solitary witch, and many highly recognized Wiccan authors would agree. It all comes down to your personal practice and beliefs.

Understanding Solitary Practice

Training and Initiation

Being a solitary with no training or initiation is different from the practices within covens of initiated members and the practice of solitary practitioners who have gone through initiation in a Tradition. While it is not necessarily 'better' to practice alone, it is 'truncated' by definition. The original Wiccan ritual has 4 officiants: a Priest, a Priestess, a Handmaid, and a Summoner. Each has specialized roles, and splitting oneself into these roles is inherently 'truncated.' This is not inherently 'bad,' but it is a fact to be acknowledged.

The Need for Training and Initiation

A solitary practitioner needs to determine their needs and understand what they are saying 'no' to. Statements like 'this is only for people who want to be in a coven' often do not provide the full information. Yes, coven work requires the ability to work with others, but traditional Wicca with a complete set of liturgies can only be accessed by initiates in a legitimate Tradition. If you do not have this training and initiation, you are missing some essential components of the practice.

Personal Spiritual Path

The term 'true Wiccan' is subjective and often problematic. Most solitary practitioners are practicing something closer to solitary eclectic Wicca-based Paganism. While not a statement of the value of their Craft, it is an expression of their personal spiritual journey. The Gods do not care if you are initiated; they will respond to you regardless. While there are some Gods who only work with initiated Wiccans, not meeting them does not preclude you from practicing or finding other deities to work with.

Continuing Your Practice

The skills developed through the three degrees are invaluable, but they are not the only path to spiritual growth. You can develop your own unique skill set that serves you and your needs perfectly. It is ingrained in the nature of Wicca that personal spiritual paths are valid and valued. Embrace your journey and your definition of Wicca.
