Is Racism Inevitable or a Choice?
Discussing whether racism is an inherent and natural condition of humankind can be a delicate but critical topic. The assertion that racism is inherent seems paradoxical given that, at some fundamental level, human infants do not discriminate based on appearance. In fact, many children at primary school age, despite the potential for societal influences, still hold biases at a minimum compared to adults. Why then, do individuals often perpetuate prejudice, especially when no scientific evidence supports such claims?
A Misleading Perception
Among the most common misconceptions is the idea that if a group of people lags behind in technological, social, or economic aspects, they must be inferior as a collective. This comparison and such beliefs are baseless and serve as an excuse to justify atrocious actions under the banner of authority or nationalism. When individuals or groups face systemic challenges, it is crucial to address the underlying issues rather than attributing them to a scapegoat's innate inferiority.
Individual Experiences and Prejudice
Consider the scenario where an individual experiences prejudice from another person due to their perceived 'otherness.' Upon discussing the issue with a closer acquaintance, the individual might hear an exaggerated and critical narrative based solely on the person's background. Although complex factors contribute to such situations, it is essential to recognize that underlying prejudices often stem from societal conditioning and fear of the unknown.
Beyond immediate personal interactions, a broader cultural context must be considered. The fear or distaste for people perceived as 'strangers' (xenophobia) is a human trait, but when this fear becomes irrational, it can be seen as a form of abnormality. If fear and xenophobia are interfering with an individual's daily life or causing them distress, seeking help and understanding is crucial.
Sin and Humanity
Religious teachings, such as those found in Christianity, often portray sin as the natural condition of humanity. This concept can be seen as a reflection of the dual nature of human beings: capable of both breathtaking acts of kindness and profound acts of injustice. Understanding that all individuals are created equal can lead to a realization that striving for superiority is both unnecessary and damaging.
Addressing Racism and Inequality
Instead of accepting racism as an inevitable aspect of human nature, it is important to recognize that it is a choice both by individuals and society. Addressing and challenging prejudices can start with education, empathy, and open dialogue. Efforts to promote equality and understanding should be prioritized, recognizing that these values contribute to a more harmonious and just society.
