Is PYQ Enough for the NEET Exam Preparation?

Is PYQ Enough for the NEET Exam Preparation?

Every year, medical aspirants across India face the challenge of preparing for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). Many wonder whether using previous year questions (PYQ) is enough to crack the NEET exam. In this article, we’ll explore this query in depth and discuss the importance of NCERT books alongside PYQ in your NEET preparation strategy.

Believing in Your Study Strategy

As a medical student, I can confidently say that relying only on PYQ might not be enough. While PYQs provide valuable practice and help identify frequently asked questions, it is important to have a holistic approach to your preparation. By combining PYQs with NCERT books, you can ensure a well-rounded understanding of the subject matter.

Cracking NEET with PYQ: I was one of those NEET-UG aspirants who relied on PYQs to crack my entrance exam. While it might seem like a quick fix, it is crucial to evaluate your mistakes regularly. This might seem boring and time-consuming, but trust me, it does a lot of good in the long run. NEET has many repeated questions, so if you’ve previously solved them, it will only take a second to solve them again.

The Importance of NCERT Books

While PYQs are an essential part of your study routine, you shouldn’t neglect NCERT books. NCERT textbooks are the core curriculum textbooks for Indian school students and are extensively used in NEET preparation. Here’s why NCERT books are indispensable:

They provide a comprehensive understanding of the subject. The content is well-structured and easy to follow. Concepts are explained clearly, making it easier to grasp. They contain important theoretical information that is often tested in the NEET exam.

For Biology, my favorite subject in NEET preparations, I had a deep love for human physiology, reproduction, genetics, and biotechnology. While I couldn’t fall in love with plant physiology, I made sure to cover all the chapters thoroughly. My study strategy involved reading each chapter of NCERT class 11 and 12 books three times, solving intext and chapter-end questions, and making notes. This approach helped me build a strong foundation in the subject.

Using NCERT as the Bible for Biology

After the exam, I realized that NCERT books are indeed the Bible for Biology. I read every chapter in both class 11 and class 12 biology books line by line and gave equal weightage to all the chapters. I also read class 11 and 12 physics three times to ensure a strong grasp on the subject. Solving additional questions from supplementary portions and practicing small numericals also proved beneficial.

Before my exam, I took a full 3-hour NEET mock test to identify and clarify my doubts. This helped me synchronize my biological clock for the actual exam. To practice MCQs, I used MTG’s 34 Years PYQ MCQ books, which I found extremely helpful. Although I scored 350 out of 360, I attribute my success to following a structured and disciplined approach, where NCERT books played a significant role.

Remember, NCERT books are not just for Biology; they are fundamental for all subjects. They provide a solid foundation and ensure that you don’t miss out on any important concepts.

Conclusion: While PYQs are a crucial part of NEET preparation, they should not be the only resource. Combining PYQs with NCERT books and a disciplined study schedule is the key to success in the NEET exam. Good luck with your preparation!
