Is Overindulgence in the Present Moment Harmful?
Dear Cheyenne, thank you for your question. How could it be wrong when the present moment is the only moment that is real? In fact, there is no other moment except this present moment, which we call the NOW. The so-called past had no real existence as it is only a memory trail created by the mind, originating as the NOW.
For example, when you celebrated your last birthday, you celebrated it on the exact day of your birthday, the NOW at that point of time. From then on, you have been calling it one of your past birthdays. Similarly, the future does not exist yet; when it finally exists, it can only exist as the NOW, and the next day you would call it the past.
If you could stay in the NOW every moment of the time, you could consider yourself a “liberated” soul. However, by definition, doing something too much is considered too much, and people will differ on what they consider to be too much. But don't worry about what other people think. Just live in the moment, but not too much!
Staying in the Present Moment: A Path to Health and Happiness
Being in the moment is the very best way to cope with reality, especially when there is outside stress we cannot control. Psychological research supports this statement. Dr. Susan David, a leading psychologist, emphasizes that:
“Space, not time, is the real currency of the human experience.”
David's research shows that people who stay centered in the present moment experience less stress and anxiety. Staying present can help you connect with your true self and be more authentic. This state of being can also foster creativity, as you become more connected to the whole.
Myths and Misconceptions
However, enjoying the moment is considered a sin by some. Perhaps you were conditioned or brainwashed into thinking it is wrong to enjoy the moment. I learned that I had to jump up and do something when others were present. I remember those Puritans, who believed that enjoying anything was sinful.
Only alone in the forest could I be in the moment. With Mother Nature, I could totally relax and be myself. Since my free newsletter is called The Vibrant Moment, I teach people to unlearn their anxious programming so they can relax and enjoy the moment. Being in the moment is what makes you healthy and happy because you are being authentic and not ego-based. In this state, you become creative because you are connected to the whole. Watch out, your true self has a body with energy!
Challenging False Beliefs
Take a look at the false beliefs you learned that keep you anxious and controlled. For example:
If I enjoy the moment too much, I will be lazy, selfish, irresponsible, and crazy. Inner critic (ego) tells you how you are being controlled and what you have learned that keep you anxious and scared.Listen to your inner critic, which is your ego, and write down what it is saying to you. Challenge these thoughts and begin to unlearn your false beliefs. When you do this, you will realize that overindulgence in the present moment is a myth, and the present moment is your path to peace, happiness, and authenticity.
Conclusion
Enjoying the present moment is not harmful. In fact, it is a practice that can lead to a healthier, happier, and more authentic life. Embrace the present moment without reservation, and you will find the peace and happiness you seek. Remember, the NOW is your present reality, not your past or future.
