How to Feel Good Living Alone: Embracing Solitude and Happiness
Living alone can be a deeply fulfilling experience if approached with the right mindset. I, Saketh, a 23-year-old introverted person, have been living alone for two years after moving to a new home 150KM away from my old hometown. Despite the challenges of being alone, life has become much easier and more enjoyable thanks to my hobbies and routine. Here’s how you can feel good living alone.
1. Embrace Solitude
Contrary to popular belief, solitude can be a powerful and positive experience. Use this time to connect with yourself and understand your likes, dislikes, and what truly makes you happy. Take the opportunity to reflect on your life and discover new aspects of yourself.
2. Cultivate a Routine
Having a daily routine can provide structure and a sense of purpose. Include activities that you enjoy and that make you feel productive. Whether it’s morning exercise, a hobby, or a relaxing evening ritual, your routine should revolve around things that bring you joy and a sense of accomplishment.
3. Decorate Your Space
Make your living space a reflection of your personality. Decorate it in a way that makes you feel comfortable and happy. Surround yourself with things that inspire you and remind you of positive aspects of your life. For example, my pet dog, LUCKY, is my constant source of joy and companionship.
4. Pursue Hobbies and Interests
Use this time to explore new hobbies or deepen your existing interests. Engage in activities you love, and let them bring immense joy to your life. For instance, I watch a movie every afternoon, which brings me energy, motivation, and sometimes, a sense of happiness or even depression.
5. Stay Connected
Living alone doesn’t mean isolating yourself. Make an effort to stay connected with friends and family. Regular phone calls, video chats, and occasional meetups can help you maintain a healthy social life and prevent loneliness.
6. Focus on Self-Care
Take care of your physical and mental health. Eat well, exercise regularly, and ensure you get enough sleep. Practice mindfulness or meditation to keep your mind calm and centered. For me, taking my dog LUCKY for walks is a great way to stay active and maintain a healthy routine.
7. Set Goals
Setting personal goals can give you a sense of direction and accomplishment. They don’t have to be big – even small achievable goals can provide motivation and satisfaction. For example, reading a book each day could be a small achievable goal for someone who enjoys reading.
8. Learn Something New
Challenge yourself to learn something new, whether it’s a language, a skill, or a course. This not only keeps your mind active but also gives you a sense of achievement. Learning a new language or skill can also help you connect with more people and improve communication.
9. Enjoy Your Own Company
Learn to enjoy spending time with yourself. This can be through activities like taking a walk, going to a café, watching a movie, or simply relaxing at home. Be your own best companion and make the most of your alone time.
10. Adopt a Pet
If circumstances allow, consider adopting a pet. Animals can provide companionship and bring a lot of joy into your life. For me, LUCKY is my everything, and jointly adopting and caring for him every day brings immense happiness.
11. Volunteer
Helping others can bring a sense of fulfillment and purpose. Find local volunteer opportunities that resonate with you and get involved in your community. Not only will you be making a positive impact, but you’ll also be meeting new people and building connections.
12. Appreciate the Freedom
One of the best things about living alone is the freedom to do what you want when you want. Appreciate and enjoy this freedom without the need to compromise. Use it to the fullest, whether it’s trying new cuisine, traveling, or simply enjoying the peace and quiet.
Happiness while living alone comes from finding joy in your own company and creating a life that you love. It’s about balancing solitude with social interaction and self-care with new experiences. By embracing the positives and making the most of your alone time, you can lead a happy and fulfilling life.
