How Would You Be Remembered When You Die?

The thought of one's legacy, the manner in which people remember them after their death, is often a reflective and critical one. Most imagine that their true self, the essence of their personality, will be celebrated. However, society often twists the narrative to suit its own narratives, presenting a stark contrast between how people are perceived during their life and after their death.

Death and Society

Imagine your image carved in a precious stone, placed in a museum, or even a memorial postage stamp in your honor. Would your name be memorialized in cities and towns, or would you become a chapter in textbooks? The world might light candles and sing songs in your memory. Yet, how many truly believe that the actual anti-cliché essence of your character will be the focus of these tributes?

A Double Standard

Our world is full of such contradictions. While a living person's character may be maligned or overlooked, very often, once they pass away, society paints a different picture. If someone is alive, people may whisper, ldquo; He hates his family.rdquo; However, once he is dead, the same society shifts and whispers, ldquo; What a great man he is. He cared so much for society and his family.rdquo; The truth about his life is often one story, but the posthumous story could be entirely different.

Tragic Example: The Squirrel Paramedic Call

We live in a world where perception can be distorted. A paramedic described a call where they saved a 74-year-old man from a tree, explaining he thought he was a squirrel. His friends added, ldquo;Yeah that what he said he was looking for.rdquo; The actual reason or his thoughts were forgotten, and the story was transformed into a humorous anecdote. This highlights how easily our stories can be recast posthumously based on what fits societal narratives.

Legacy of Quietness

For those of us who are very old and not particularly friendly to those around us, the posthumous legacy might be quite different. Consider the case of someone who is known for being easy to live with, quiet, and reserved. If I were to die, I believe that this will be the narrative that prevails. Society will not remember the comparison to a squirrel but rather the kind and reserved character that I quietly maintained.

The Complexity of Legacy

Regardless of your life's experiences, it is almost certain that people will speak fondly about you after your death. This is not necessarily because of your actions or your true self, but because of how society interprets and reshapes these narratives. It is a fascinating and often contradictory journey that everyone embarks upon.
