How Prepared Are We for a Zombie Apocalypse?
As the renowned sci-fi author George A. Romero once said, "The zombie is a social creature, but it is not a predator. It is a soulless force. It seeks only to overwhelm." It's easy to dismiss the idea of a zombie apocalypse as a mere plot device from the world of fiction. However, in a world where global pandemics and natural disasters are becoming more frequent, the concept of being prepared for any potential disaster, including a zombie scenario, is becoming more important.
My Preparation
Mmmm… I can also say I'm "partly" prepared for it, even though I wouldn't classify myself as a "prepper". My situation is a bit unique because I live in a house with my own water and septic system, and a gas generator. I usually buy non-perishable foods in bulk, so I have quite a lot of them. Additionally, I own a couple of guns and am hoping to acquire more soon. My vehicle is an old but reliable 4x4 which can get me through most terrains.
However, what makes me feel most prepared are the military bases in my neighborhood, and the neighborhood itself, which is equipped to handle some level of emergency. This means I know exactly how to get there, and I have local maps downloaded onto my phone and tablet, so I don't need the internet to navigate. These last two points make me as prepared as I will ever get, no matter what else I might waste my time on doing, such as collecting more food or ammunition.
Preparations for the End Times
Many people, myself included, do not have extensive preparations for the zombie apocalypse, yet we are prepared for other emergencies. For example, I have firewood, water, food, guns, ammunition, and toilet paper. It's sufficient for most disasters but may be non-existent for a zombie apocalypse scenario. I am not worried about zombies; I am prepared for when the "spit hits the fan," whatever it may be.
Why Preparedness Matters in Real Life
While the idea of a zombie apocalypse may seem far-fetched, it's important to recognize that life is unpredictable. We need to be prepared for any potential scenario. Preparing for a zombie attack, like preparing for a natural disaster or a pandemic, is all about having a plan and the necessary resources should disaster strike.
Some individuals become preppers, preparing for the worst-case scenarios, while others might only have a basic survival kit. It's important to find a balance that works for you and your family. The key is to have: Water and food supply A means of protection such as weapons First aid kits and emergency medical supplies Communication devices (radios, satellite phones) Emergency power sources (generator, batteries)
Conclusion
While the idea of a zombie apocalypse may be entertaining or seen as purely fictional, it's a reminder that we should always be prepared for any emergency. Whether it's a natural disaster, a pandemic, or even something as fantastical as a zombie outbreak, having a plan and the necessary resources can make a significant difference in survival and well-being. So, take some time to review your own emergency preparedness and make sure you're as ready as possible, no matter what the future brings.
Remember, being prepared can make all the difference, and the key to success is preparation and understanding that being prepared can give you a sense of security, even in the most unexpected of circumstances. Whether it's a zombie apocalypse or anything else, being prepared is the best defense we have.
