How My Perception of Success Has Evolved Through Life
My journey through life has not been conventional, and my perception of success has morphed significantly over the years. Riddled with challenges and unexpected turns, my path to understanding success has been uniquely profound and personal.
Early Struggles and Unexpected Breakthroughs
My academic record in school was undistinguished, barely scraping through high school graduation. More significantly, it was during this time that I met the love of my life, a woman whose parents were understandably disapproving. It seemed clear that neither of us would follow the traditional paths of becoming doctors or lawyers. In fact, the path we chose took a dark turn, as I was briefly incarcerated for drug possession.
Following this turmoil, however, I emerged with a new perspective on life. In 2009, a serious medical diagnosis cast a shadow, and yet, the coin toss meant survival. Small victories became my focus: waking up in the morning, drinking coffee, and enjoying the simple pleasures of walking outside.
Professional Success and Personal Fulfillment
Professionally, my path took an unexpected turn. Initially taking a job as a tire changer, I gradually advanced, finding myself in roles that required engineering processes, risk mitigation, and human intelligence. Over time, I became a CEO, having a hand in identifying and resolving problems, as well as making practical jokes. Eventually, I retired early, better off than many, and enjoyed a variety of academic successes outside of formal education.
The NSA even sought me out as a recruiter, recognizing my unique abilities and experiences. Unique as these experiences were, they underscore the varying definitions of success that one can achieve along the way.
Personal Success: A Spiritual Journey
For me, the ultimate definition of success is found in a deep communion with God. It involves being blameless and righteous, walking in the Truth as guided by Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. Success is not just material but spiritual, rooted in a sense of purpose and alignment with one's beliefs.

Life's lessons are diverse and continually evolving. It's essential to recognize that different goals appeal to us at different stages. Settling down with a partner is easier before the age of 32, but beyond this point, it can be challenging to find what one truly desires. Life is short and often unfair, but there are constants that do not change, such as the pervasive male chauvinism often present in society.
My journey has taught me that success is multifaceted. Early on, it was about status, money, and material goods, but over time, I realized that relationships, health, sanity, peace of mind, and a sense of meaning are far more important.
