Honoring Fallen Heroes: A Memorial Day Reflection by a Military Veteran

Happy Memorial Day! This special day is a moment of reflection and tribute to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. However, my thoughts are often divided, with a sense of pride mixed with sorrow. Let's dive into my personal actions and reflections on this meaningful occasion.

The Memorial Day Service

I attended our small town’s Memorial Day service with my wife just a few moments ago. The atmosphere was solemn and respectful. The opening prayer was led by our police force chaplain, who spoke about the origins of Memorial/Decoration Day and the traditions that have been passed down over the years.

A notable part of the service was a vet who is still able to wear his uniform. I was envious of this moment of pride and connection to his service. The service also included the posting of colors by our local high school ROTC color guard and a flyover by a local Air Force two-biplane and a monoplane in a ‘V’ formation.

My Silent Honor and Sound Off

I will silently honor our fallen from all of our Services. My silent thoughts will revolve around the gratitude and wonder at why some Americans show little respect for the sacrifices of our fallen heroes. Many young men who never had a chance to live a full life gave their lives when called. Yet, their markers are defaced, smashed, or pushed over as a sign of hatred or mockery.

My ‘Sound Off’ for Memorial Day

My actions this Memorial Day will be different from typical celebrations. Here are the plans:

Monday morning at 0700 - Placing American flags on poles along the sidewalk for several blocks downtown.

0900 - Attending part of a Memorial Day ceremony at a local cemetery.

1100 - Participating in a Memorial Day ceremony at the Heroes Memorial downtown.

1300 - Joining a flag folding presentation and playing taps at a retirement community for veterans.

1700 - Removing the flags from the sidewalks.

Visiting the grave of a 24-year-old KIA Army friend at a local National Cemetery.

Memorial’s True Meaning

Memorial Day is about remembering those who did not get to go home. This day is not a time for "sounding off," but rather a moment of honor, respect, and sadness. Many others have buddies whose names are on The Wall, and we, the veterans, recognize the sacrifices they made. On days like this, we thump our chests, but not on Memorial Day.

So, what will YOU be doing to show respect to our fallen military heroes? Tell us in the comments below.
