Home Cooking Frequencies and Tips: A Survey of Cooking Practices
Home cooking can be a rewarding pastime, offering health benefits, financial savings, and the ability to tailor meals exactly to your taste and nutritional needs. However, not everyone opts for home-cooked meals daily. Let's explore the various frequencies of home cooking and some tips to simplify the process.
Frequency of Cooking
According to a survey of cooking habits, individuals maintain varying frequencies in their home cooking:
1. Weekly Cooking
Many people, like one respondent, cook 1 or 2 days out of the week. This is particularly common for individuals with demanding jobs or responsibilities. For example, 'I would say 1 or 2 days out of the week. Due to me working, I cannot cook from scratch all the time.' This scheduling can become a challenge, especially if home-cooked meals are more expensive than dining out, but with careful planning, it is possible to manage.
2. Everyday Cooking
On the other end of the spectrum, some enthusiasts cook daily, finding it more cost-effective and enjoyable. One individual mentions, 'Every day if I can. But when I am on the road, I try to find sound eateries. Then again, I am usually lurking in a foodie mecca somewhere in the world, so the food is pretty spectacular most of the time!' Another asserts, 'Daily.. We rarely eat out. I cook breakfast, lunch, usually just something easy and dinner. On Wednesday nights we go to my in-laws for dinner so I get a much appreciated break.'
3. Family-Based Cooking
For those with families, the cooking frequency can be tied to their lifestyle. For instance, 'I am cooking 2 - 3 times a week for home cook meals. I prefer that way because it saves a lot of money than to eat out, especially now. Also, in home cook meals, I can control the spices according to healthy guidelines and I know what I put in my cooking.' Another adds, 'Daily. I used to cook for a family of 6… now it’s just me. But I cook all my meals at home. I like my cooking!'
4. Non-Cookers
However, not everyone enjoys or possesses the ability to cook. Some find it a challenge or even a burden. For instance, 'I don’t cook; I microwave.' Another adds, 'As a senior, I cook dinner for my wife, and I every night, along with my breakfast every morning. When I built this home, I was a senior, and I wanted it easy to use. My kitchen has no lower cabinets, other than the sink base. It’s all drawer slides. Some hold all my pots and pans, one is under my oven, and holds all my baking pans. I built a very large pantry with all my other cooking appliances on shelves easy to reach.' Yet, others face challenges, 'today my kids wanted crescent rolls. The ‘easy to make’ ones that you unroll put on a baking sheet and pop in the oven for 12 minutes. Naturally, the time my kids want something cooked, my husband, the chef of the house, is not at home. So I decided I’d try making them. I don’t cook. Pasta is about as far as I’ll go, and even that isn’t fancy. It took me 25 minutes to find our baking sheets. I’m not joking. 25 minutes. I don’t know where they were. Clearly, I don’t clean either as I’d put them in the oven, not in a cabinet in the back of our pantry. Who the hell puts them there I’ve got a huge kitchen, plenty of drawers shelves, and places to put things. You would think it would be near the cabinet on our island where we keep pots and pans. Nope. Entirely different location, not even close. They’re still cooking. Hopefully, I don’t food poison everyone.
