From Hobby to Business: The Journey of Soap Making for Income

Handmade soaps have captivated many over the years, including myself, who discovered the art in 2012. This hobby has not only enriched my life with its calming process but has also provided a unique avenue for earning extra income. However, taking this passion to the next level has not been an easy journey, fraught with challenges and personal turmoil. In this article, I share my experiences and struggles with my hobby, the hopes I hold for it, and the support system I have built around me.

The Allure of Soap Making

Soap making, or soapcrafting, is a unique and delightful craft that involves blending fats and oils with lye to create a variety of soaps and skincare products. The process of soap making is both therapeutic and rewarding, allowing me to express my creativity while also pampering myself and others. In 2012, I embarked on this journey with curiosity and an eagerness to learn, and it has since become a cherished hobby that I eagerly pursue daily.

Navigating the Path to Income

As my interest in soap making grew, so did my desire to turn this hobby into a more substantial endeavor. I envisioned starting a small home business, where the profits from the sale of handmade soaps could not only support my passion but also provide me with an extra income stream. I began by experimenting with different recipes and techniques, refining my skills through practice and online tutorials. My journey was further facilitated by the support of my family, particularly my mother and children, who believed in me and offered their encouragement.

Challenges and Personal Struggles

Despite the support and skills I honed, the path to making soap a sustainable business faced its challenges. My attempts to move forward were hobbled by various obstacles, most notably my husband’s lack of support. Over the past 1.5 years, I have faced a significant setback in making my last batch of soap, a hiatus that has left me feeling anxious and depressed. These mental health issues are not unusual, as studies show that the stress of restructuring one’s life and career can lead to increased anxiety and depression. My anxiety and depression were already present, but the gap in my activity has worsened these conditions.

Seeking Professional Support

Recognizing the severity of my mental health struggles, I sought professional help through a psychiatrist. The psychiatrist, while understanding the mental toll of my situation, encouraged me to continue with my soap making. He emphasized that engaging in a creative and fulfilling hobby like soap making could have a positive impact on my overall well-being and may even serve as a therapeutic outlet for overcoming anxiety and depression. While making soap again remains a distant goal, I find solace in knowing that I have a plan and support system to return to this passion.

The Hope for the Future

Though the road to bringing my soap making business to the next level has been challenging, I remain hopeful. I believe that with perseverance and the support of my family, I can overcome these obstacles and once again make soap in significant quantities. The ultimate goal is to turn this passion into a business that not only brings joy and fulfillment but also provides a steady income. Through my journey, I have learned that the key to success lies in embracing the process, staying resilient, and never losing sight of one's dreams and aspirations.
