Exploring the Unique Charm of Astana, Kazakhstan

As a first-time visitor to Astana, Kazakhstan, one might be struck by several unique features that set this capital city apart. Discover what makes Astana special and learn about its intriguing culture, architecture, and attractions.

Weather and First Impressions

My first impression of Astana was formed by the weather, which was unexpectedly cloudy. Venturing further, I noted that Astana is predominantly populated by "southerners" - people who have migrated from South Kazakhstan, making them more traditional and language-oriented. In contrast, the "northerners" are more open-minded. However, every region has its exceptions, and there are always individuals who defy these stereotypes.

Welcome at the Airport

From a more practical standpoint, my arrival at Astana's international airport, Nazarbayev International, was notably convenient. This airport, which is a vast improvement over its ten-year-old predecessor, is both cleaner and more modern. Visually, it bears a striking resemblance to Dubai's airport but on a smaller scale. The professionalism and courtesy of the staff are perhaps even more impressive than in airports back in my home country, Russia.

Convenient Transportation

Transitioning from the airport to the city center was also smooth, thanks to well-organized parking facilities and efficient bus stops. Astana's road network is among the best I've seen. Many of the roads are suitable for cycling, and the entire city layout, particularly the new area located on the left bank of the Ishim River, is well-designed.

Architectural Marvels

One of the most striking aspects of Astana is its architecture. Though not every building is an architectural marvel, the modern trade and business centers and malls are certainly a highlight. Notable among these is the Khan Shatyr mall, situated under a massive, transparent dome made of plastic panels. This structure was designed by the renowned architect Norman Foster. The mall is a marvel of modern design and engineering.

Sports and Fitness

Astana is a city that values sports and fitness. Vast ranges of sports centers, stadiums, arenas, and other facilities abound, making it a favorite spot for both competitive and recreational athletes. Notable among them are the Saryarka Cycling Arena, Alau Skating Stadium, and Barys Hockey Arena, which are among the largest I have ever seen. Outdoor cycling and triathlon paths are also abundant, providing a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the warm days free of charge.

Cultural and Linguistic Challenges

The low proficiency in English among the local population is one of the notable challenges for newcomers. Taxi drivers, in particular, might attempt to exploit this to increase their fares. Nonetheless, the city is a melting pot of people from various regions of Kazakhstan, each bringing their own unique cultural and economic background.

Winter Adventures

The winter season in Astana is known for its severe weather conditions. Temperatures of -30 to -50 degrees Celsius, combined with strong winds, can make even experienced cold-weather travelers feel uncomfortable. However, this does not diminish the appeal of the city, which offers a unique contrast between the harsh conditions and its modern, vibrant atmosphere.
